U.S. Left Follows Familiar Pattern

Judge Kavanaugh, in his rebuttal to Democrat attacks on his nomination, broke convention and cited Democrat goals to essentially overturn the results of the 2016 election. In the unlikely forum of a hearing to rule on a nomination for U.S. Supreme Court, an important threat to Constitutional order was given its greatest exposure.

The U.S. is not alone in this deterioration of democracy.  In Europe, the European Union has  engaged in tactics that replace rule by the people with rule by bureaucrats.

There is an extraordinary move by U.S. leftist elites to functionally ignore and overturn the results of the 2016 presidential election. The hard left, which has attained near-controlling influence over the lion’s share of the media, academia, and the leadership of the Democrat Party has engaged in nearly every conceivable tactic, including violence in the streets, a false sense of hysteria created by the media, attempts by the Ninth Circuit Court to impose unconstitutional restrains on the lawful ability of the President to restrict potentially harmful travel from terrorist-infested lands, and illegal negotiations by out of office pols to conduct foreign affairs as though Obama was still in office.

This is greater than the normal roughhousing by Democrats against Republicans in the U.S. It is a rejection of the concept that the majority, not the elites, have the final say, and in the sanctity of the concept of recognizing the results of the ballot box.

The immediate aftermath of the 2016 presidential voting was violence in the streets, reportedly well-funded by leftist billionaires. That tactic continued into the inauguration itself.  It was followed by attempts by Ninth Circuit judges to unlawfully hamper specific presidential directives on travel, and various moves by Democrat state attorneys general to engage the White House in groundless legal squabbles. Some Democrat-governed city and state governments sought to limit federal jurisdiction in immigration by declaring themselves “sanctuary” areas. The  recommendation of firmer CIA director John Brennan, (who has admitted to voting for a Communist Party candidate for president) to federal employees to disregard the directives of President Trump is perhaps the most troubling and unsettling example of this entire strategy.

A disturbing pattern of Democrat candidates for state attorney general openly campaigned on a platform of attacking the White House, an issue certainly outside of their job description. Obama made no secret of his contempt for the Constitution and the normal functioning of democracy.  His belief that he didn’t “have to wait for Congress,” and his acting on that by  enacting legislation-like executive orders, his signing off on what were, by any standard definition, major foreign treaties without the advice and consent of the Senate, his use of federal agencies to attack political rivals all attest to this. His presidency is over, but his leftist belief that the Constitution was an impediment that could be swept aside when convenient endures.

It follows a pattern that has become all too familiar over the past century in socialist nations.  It is no coincidence that as socialism becomes more mainstream within the Democrat Party, elitist and historically familiar socialist tactics become more common.  Soviet Bolsheviks, German National Socialists (Nazis) Chinese Communists, Cuban revolutionaries, and Venezuelan Chavistas all engaged in a similar timeline.  Allege to represent the poor or downtrodden, turn various segments of society against each other, and ignore democratic practices as a self-serving elite takes the reins of power under the pretense that they know better than the general public how to govern.

American leftists like to portray themselves as being “of the people.” That is clearly nonsense. Their love of high taxes, excessive bureaucracy, their determination to condone massive illegal immigration to dilute voting power, particularly in poor communities, their moves to crush free speech, all point to an elitist mob that will use any excuse, exploit any issue, and exacerbate any situation to gain power.

Substituting Censorship and Lies for Debate

Eight years of Progressive control of both the White House and the national agenda resulted in economic stagnation, a sharply reduced defense environment, a doubling of debt, and deteriorated race relations.  Despite those poor results, hard-core leftists have managed to increase their influence.

Campaigning on the issues is not a winning tactic for an increasingly Progressive-dominated party. Instead, they and their supporters have, with disturbing frequency, adopted a strategy that combines suppression of alternative ideas, along with personal and inaccurate attacks on both rival politicians and anyone else who opposes their perspectives. Character assassination targets extend far beyond President Trump.

Florida GOP gubernatorial candidate Ron DeSantis and Red Sox baseball star J.D. Martinez provide telling examples.  DeSantis, emphasizing the importance of the issues in his state, urged voters not to “monkey it up.”  According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the similar phrase “monkey around” is defined as “to do things that are not useful or serious: to waste time.”

But DeSantis’s opponents decided that the well-known and oft-use phrase was a racial slur. (His opponent is black.) It was a great way to avoid a discussion of the reality that the radical views expressed by hard-left candidate Andrew Gillum can be readily compared to those which have recently wrecked Venezuela and previously destroyed other nations both politically and economically, and have repeatedly been demonstrated to be a disaster wherever implemented.

An even more startling falsehood was seen in the thoroughly false characterization of the remarks about gun control uttered by Red Sox player J.D. Martinez, an advocate of Second Amendment rights.

Martinez noted, correctly, that the nightmare regime of Adolf Hitler moved to disarm the German population to eliminate the potential of resistance to his unprecedented assault on human rights. The Second Amendment is a target of the Left, but rather than engage in an honest dialogue, they chose to falsely portray Martinez as quoting Hitler in an admiring manner.

Beyond character assassination, suppression of alternative views has become a key tactic.

The direction is turning into even more worrisome areas. Despite the overwhelmingly favorable image of leftist candidates portrayed by the media, the mere threat of objective reporting is considered unacceptable by Progressives. The most recent incident is Hillary Clinton’s stunning comment that half of rival Donald Trump’s supporters belonged in a “basket of deplorables.” She went on to claim that those who favor the GOP nominee were “racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic, you name it.”

This was certainly not the first time a leftist candidate has made unfounded, untrue and inappropriate comments about well over half the nation’s voters. In 2011, President Obama, speaking in California, described those who with differed with him as people who “cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”

In the 2016 presidential primaries, several progressive groups sought to physically block access to Trump rallies.

The actions of those in positions of legal authority are frightening. Attorney General Loretta Lynch openly speculated about the possibility of prosecuting those who differed with the President Obama’s perspectives on climate change. The examples are profound and significant.

Throughout the Obama Administration, numerous attempts have been made to control free speech. His representatives on the Federal Communications Commission sought to embed “monitors” in newsrooms. Reporters who criticize the Administration have been penalized in various ways.

Now, defeated in his domestic attempts to control contrary opinions, the President has engineered the international control of the internet, an end run around the First Amendment. As this article was being prepared, the U.S. Senate was preparing to convene an urgent meeting to block the surrender of internet control. As reported in the Wall Street Journal President Obama wants this to be the last month of an open, uncensored internet guaranteed by the U.S. government. In addition to taking jobs away from carriage drivers and funding leftist candidates, de Blasio’s other passion apparently is criticizing cops. His verbal attacks on his own city’s police force, which most believe to be the most professional and unbiased in the nation, has been so severe that at one point officers mounted a work slow down of nonemergency activities in response. A National Review study notes that “public safety remains at risk from an activist mayor who sees his base as the anti-police Left.”

America’s Great Divide

Two completely different philosophies of government are dividing the U.S. population. More serious than any mere difference over a single issue, the chasm represents wholly divergent views on the rights of individuals and the powers of federal, state and local authorities.

Since the dawn of the American Republic, there has been a fairly consistent understanding of what government is supposed to do. Washington handles foreign relations, protects the nation from enemies abroad, settles disputes between the states, protects the liberties enumerated in the Bill of Rights (and later amendments), administers federal courts, patrols the borders, delivers the mail, opens up new frontiers and provides major interstate transportation infrastructure. States and localities are tasked with protecting residents from crime, maintaining sanitary and safety conditions, providing local transportation, educating the young, and providing a legal system to peacefully settling local disputes.

There have been relatively moderate additions to those duties. Programs such as Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid gave the government more direct interaction with individuals. States and cities provided financial and other assistance to those in need. But the guiding principles of the ninth and tenth Amendments within the Bill of Rights remained intact:

Ninth Amendment: The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.

Tenth Amendment: The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

In the view of progressives, however, the 9th and 10th Amendment limitations on government’s rights and duties are anachronisms to be largely ignored, as are the separation of powers and the distinction between the federal government’s role and that of more local jurisdictions.

Progressives choose to de-emphasize traditional duties and limitations on government, and replace them with different responsibilities. They advocate reduced funding for defense on the national level and crime fighting on the local level and shifting those dollars to what have been called “nanny state” priorities.

Some of those new priorities have been the subject of ridicule. While mayor of NYC, Michael Bloomberg cut the size of the police department, and advocated cutting the size of the fire department. He focused on regulating what size soda could be purchased, and the salt intake of his constituents.

Others have created extraordinary controversy. The use of the Common Core curriculum to enhance federal oversight of education and politicize curriculum has been contentious. Federal interference into what was once a local responsibility extends even to what food items may be placed on school menus.

The most controversial, of course, was the enactment of Obamacare. While its progressive advocates likened it to programs such as social security, its opponents noted that its lengthy list of bureaucratic interactions with the patient-physician relationship render it an extraordinary and inappropriate increase in federal power.

The dramatic increase in the size of existing programs is also indicative of the shift in governmental emphasis from basic services to a social-welfare nanny state. The Fiscal Times has noted that “everyone is aware of SNAP (food stamps), the mother of all food handouts, where over 47.8 million people participate at an annual cost of $81 billion. But awareness of the sprawling array of other government food programs is another eye opener. WIC, for example, the Women, Infants and Children Food and Nutrition Service, started small in 1968 to help poor and undernourished mothers-to-be. It now covers 53 percent of all infants in America at an annual cost of $8.8 billion, and involves 90 state agencies, 1,836 bureaus and 9,000 clinics. Political correctness—which in practice can include the rejection of anything that challenges left wing biases—has replaced open discourse.
