Growing Danger From Mexican Election

Those advocating the abolition of ICE and opposing reasonable border controls should reexamine their positions, particularly in the aftermath of the Mexican election. Leftist candidate Lopez Obrador, known also by the nickname AMLO, will be the next president of Mexico. He believes that “All have the right to immigrate to the United States.”  In essence, he has repealed America’s right to have sovereign borders. His approximately 53% victory was facilitated by the votes from the 12 million Mexicans living in the United States.

The extraordinary concept of abolishing the federal agency responsible for keeping America’s borders secure has come under attack in recent weeks.  A key figure, New York’s Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D, NY) has joined the chorus of those seeking to eliminate it. As both a Senator from a large state and a potential contender for the Democrat nomination for president, she is neither an outsider nor an irrelevant figure.

Obrador’s leftist politics could turn Mexico into another Venezuela, Cuba or Nicaragua. If that occurs, the number of his citizens seeking to leave will skyrocket, flooding the U.S. with refugees.

But there is an even more immediate danger. Leftist regimes within the Western hemisphere have established military ties with Russia, China, and Iran.  Adding Mexico to that list, particularly considering its large presence on America’s southern border, presents a threat of the highest magnitude.

A growing danger from Latin America already exists. Moscow’s has placed landing facilities for nuclear bombers and a spy station in Nicaragua.  It has plans to place other heavy military equipment in the country. Russia’s Sputnik News notes that Nicaragua’s military training center was “constructed with Russia’s assistance and named after the legendary WW2 hero, Soviet Marshal Zhukov.” The U.S. Naval Institute  revealed in 2016 that “In late April Russia started shipping shipped T-72B tanks to Nicaragua.

The America’s Report has also linked Ortega to Iran “Iran has been making inroads into Latin America for some time, especially in countries with strong Chavista influence, including Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador and dangerously Nicaragua, which is very close in distance to the US… We have to consider that Iran has already used Hezbollah to attack what it considers enemies in Latin America, when they blew up the Israeli embassy and a Jewish center in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in the early -90’s killing and wounding hundreds…When Ortega became President of Nicaragua in 2007, [Iranian leader] Ahmadinejad considered his ascension so important that he was in Managua to attend the inauguration. Ortega even honored Ahmadinejad with two of the country’s most prestigious awards….Nicaragua is providing a safe place where Iran can send Revolutionary Guards and move them in and around the region.

In 2015, Pravda   reported “Russia and Cuba agreed to train Cuban specialists in Russia. This long-term strategy imposes obligations on Russia to supply its allies in Latin America with advanced weapons, including air defense systems, aircraft and warships.

Iran’s semi-official FARS news agency has reported that there are plans to deploy warships in Latin American. Iran has been seeking to broaden ties and cooperation with Latin American states, including Mexico, iVenezuela, Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Cuba, and Colombia.

The Center for Security Policy calls Russia in Latin America “The problem we have chosen to ignore…Russian activities closer to home in the Western Hemisphere have been largely overlooked or perhaps just disregarded. There have been reports of  increasing Russian  military cooperation with countries in Latin America that are hostile to the United States, mainly Cuba, Venezuela, and  Nicaragua.  This includes agreements between Russia and the above named countries that would enable Russia to place their naval logistic facilities in Venezuelan, Cuban and Nicaraguan territory.

Beijing’s presence is increasingly being felt within the Western Hemisphere as well.

Paul Coyer, writing for Forbes reports that “Beijing’s investments globally are rarely undertaken with solely business goals in … In the case of Huawei, as the largest telecommunications equipment supplier in the world [with] strong ties to China’s military and intelligence services, [has a]  considerable role in building many of Latin America’s telecommunications and information networks. [that is] is a boon to Chinese intelligence.

An Official Chinese document notes that “Since 2013, the Chinese leadership has set forth a series of major initiatives and measures on strengthening China’s relations and cooperation with Latin America and the Caribbean in a wide range of areas.”  It is of concern that trade is seen as a means to further other goals, and military cooperation plays a significant role. The document notes:

“China will actively carry out military exchanges and cooperation with Latin American and Caribbean countries, increase friendly exchanges between defense and military leaders from the two sides, strengthen policy dialogue and set up working meeting mechanisms, conduct exchanges of visits between delegations and vessels, deepen professional exchanges in such fields as military training, personnel training and UN peacekeeping, expand pragmatic cooperation in humanitarian relief, counter-terrorism and other non-traditional security fields, and enhance cooperation in military trade and military technology.”

Trump Seeks to Restore U.S. Leadership in Space, Part 3

The New York Analysis of Policy and Government concludes its examination of the significant changes the Trump Administration is bringing to America’s role in space. In this final segment, we quote directly from the President.

In his June Infrastructure and Technology statement, President Trump noted:

“…when it comes to space, too often, for too many years, our dreams of exploration and discovery were really squandered by politics and bureaucracy, and we knocked that out.  So important for our psyche, what’s you’re doing.  It’s going to be important monetarily and militarily.  But so important for right up here — the psyche.  We don’t want China and Russia and other countries leading us.  We’ve always led — we’ve gone way far afield for decades now, having to do with our subject today.  We’re going to be the leader by far.  We’re behind you a thousand percent. America’s vital interest in space lost out to special interests in Washington…But all of that is changing…

“My administration is reclaiming America’s heritage as the world’s greatest space-faring nation.  The essence of the American character is to explore new horizons and to tame new frontiers.  But our destiny, beyond the Earth, is not only a matter of national identity, but a matter of national security.  So important for our military…When it comes to defending America, it is not enough to merely have an American presence in space.  We must have American dominance in space…One year ago, I revived the National Space Council and put exactly the right man in charge, and that’s our friend, Mike Pence.  He feels very strongly about this.  And in December, I signed a historic directive that will return Americans to the moon for the first time since 1972…Always remembering it’s about that, but it’s also about jobs and the economy…This time, we will do more than plant our flag and leave our footprints.  We will establish a long-term presence, expand our economy, and build the foundation for the eventual mission to Mars — which is actually going to happen very quickly.

“I am instructing my administration to embrace the budding commercial space industry.  We are modernizing out-of-date space regulations.  They’re way out of date.  They haven’t been changed in many, many years.  And today we’re taking one more step to unleash the power of American ingenuity.  In a few moments, I will sign a new directive to federal departments and agencies.  They will work together with American industry to implement a state-of-the-art framework for space traffic management.  But don’t let it get too out of control, please.  We know about what’s going on with a lot of other rules and regulations.

“Two previous administrations tried and failed to develop a system to deal with congested conditions in orbit.  We are finally going to get it done.  It’s going to happen fast.  One year from now, our nation will mark an important milestone in human history: half a century since Americans first stepped off the Eagle and onto the moon…

“…we are ready to begin the next great chapter of American space exploration.  This is a very important day.  This is a very important gathering.  A new generation of young people seeks to challenge — really challenge hard — to get their talent and their skill to work.  And now we’re giving them a forum and a platform from which they can put that genius to work. Legions of welders and metalworkers, scientists and engineers stand ready to build a powerful new rocket and gleaming new spaceships.  And that goes with all of the other things that we’re building in our country.

“Our nation of pioneers still yearns to conquer the unknown, because we are Americans and the future belongs totally to us.  Once more, we will launch intrepid souls blazing through the sky and soaring into the heavens.  Once more, we will summon the American spirit to tame the next great American frontier.  And once more, we will proudly lead humanity — and that’s what it is, it’s humanity — beyond the Earth and into those forbidden skies, but they will not be forbidden for long.”

Trump Seeks to Restore U.S. Leadership in Space, Part 2

The New York Analysis of Policy and Government continues its examination of the changes President Trump is bringing to America’s role in space.

In sharp contrast to Obama’s disdain for the U.S. space program,  President Trump, who mentioned the importance of space in his inaugural address, has followed President Jefferson’s example. In a White House speech, he noted that “”America will always be the first in space…”We don’t want China and Russia and other countries leading us. We’ve always led…My administration is reclaiming America’s heritage as the world’s greatest space-faring nation.”

Mr. Trump’s space emphasis extends to military, scientific and commercial space endeavors. He has ordered the Pentagon to create a new branch of the armed services devoted strictly to outer space. He has directed that the regulatory processes that have placed red-tape barriers to the commercialization of rocket launches and extraterrestrial exploration to be removed.  And he has reset NASA’s budget away from earth science and towards exploration.

On May 24, 2018, the President signed Space Policy Directive – 2 to reform United States commercial space regulatory framework, seeking to ensure our place as a leader in space commerce. On March 23, 2018, President Trump unveiled a National Space Strategy that laid out an approach to ensuring that the United States is strong and competitive in the space environment. On December 11, 2017, the President signed Space Policy Directive – 1, instructing NASA to return United States astronauts to the Moon, followed by human missions to Mars. On June 30 2017, President Trump signed an Executive Order reviving the National Space Council for the first time in 24 years.

The importance of space technology cannot be overemphasized.  Indeed, the future existence of humanity may well depend upon it. In June, the White House unveiled the “National Near-Earth Object Preparedness Strategy and Action Plan.”

“The National Near-Earth Object Preparedness Strategy and Action Plan (Strategy and Action Plan) will improve our Nation’s preparedness to address the hazard of near-Earth object (NEO) impacts over the next 10 years. Its primary role is to help organize and coordinate NEO-related efforts within Federal Departments and Agencies, with a particular focus on efforts that are already existing and resourced. It seeks to leverage and enhance existing assets and capabilities—National and international, public and private—to effectively manage the risks associated with NEOs. The Strategy and Action Plan builds on efforts by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and Department of Energy (DOE) to detect and characterize the NEO population and to prevent and respond to NEO impacts on Earth.

“Five strategic goals, each supported by a set of strategic objectives and specific associated actions, underpin the effort to enhance the Nation’s preparedness for potential NEO impacts:

Supporting actions will reduce current levels of uncertainty and aid in more accurate modeling and more effective decision-making.

Goal 2: Improve NEO Modeling, Prediction, and Information Integration: Agencies will coordinate the development of validated modeling tools and simulation capabilities that aid in characterizing and mitigating NEO impact risks while streamlining data flows to support effective decision-making.

Goal 3: Develop Technologies for NEO Deflection and Disruption Missions: NASA will lead development of technologies for fast-response NEO reconnaissance missions and timely missions to deflect or disrupt hazardous NEOs. Developing these technologies before an imminent threat arises will strengthen our ability to prevent NEO impact disasters.

Goal 4: Increase International Cooperation on NEO Preparation: Agencies will work to inform and develop international support for addressing global NEO impact risks. International engagement and cooperation will help the Nation to prepare more effectively for a potential NEO impact.

Goal 5: Strengthen and Routinely Exercise NEO Impact Emergency Procedures and Action Protocols: The United States will strengthen and exercise procedures and protocols for assessing NEO threats, communication regarding threats, and response and recovery activities. Coordinated communications and notifications within the U.S. Government and with foreign governments will improve impact emergency preparedness and reduce the physical and economic harm to the Nation.”

The Report Concludes Tomorrow.

Rejecting America’s Founding Principles

As Americans celebrate Independence Day, it is worrisome that the basic and underlying principles for which, and upon which, the nation was founded are under attack. There can be little doubt that those on the extreme left clearly have a very different vision, not just of what America should be, but whether it’s guiding principles are worthy of existing at all.

Increasingly, the concept of free speech has been assaulted by those who would force their partisan views of political correctness and acceptance of censorship upon the citizenry.  Academic institutions harass, intimidate, and force out students and teachers who dare to challenge left wing orthodoxy. Media and internet powers ignore contrary views and engage in efforts to delete opinions that conflict with theirs. Officials, during the Obama Administration, sought to place federal monitors in news rooms. New York’s Senator Schumer actually introduced legislation to limit the application of the First Amendment towards paid political speech. So-called campaign regulations move far beyond guaranteeing fair and transparent elections and into the realm of actively discouraging average citizens from competing with career professionals in running for office.

Consider also the comments of Obama-era Attorney General Loretta Lynch, who openly considered criminally prosecuting anyone who merely expressed verbal disagreement with Barack’s views on climate change.

Self-defined globalists seek to subject the Constitution to the dictates of unelected, unaccountable and undemocratic international institutions. Before there even was an American Constitution, the concept of forcing laws upon America not of the country’s own making worried the Founders.  Indeed, the Declaration of Independence contains this phrase, speaking at the time of King George III:

“He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws…”

Those repeated claims by the left that the U.S. Constitution may be limited by international treaties and dictates can be seen most prominently in attempts to limit the Second Amendment but exists in other areas as well. Consider President Obama’s motives in removing some aspects of internet control from America, the nation which founded it, and surrendering it to an international body which is not bound by the First Amendment. Consider, as well, aspects of some international trade agreements which take authority away from Congress.

Because your HVAC system plays a significant role in the life of each and every person. order cialis over at this shop It’s not the only prescient phrase in that extraordinary and unprecedented document. Washington’s bureaucracy sees itself as superior to the elected government.  The stunning spectacle of the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation ignoring Congressional demands to release records and key information after Congress has repeatedly demanded them should trouble every American.  Similarly, the actions of the Obama-era Environmental Protection Agency in believing that it could, even in cases where no clear environmental issue is at stake, control the actions of landowners on their own property is a major cause for alarm.

The Declaration itself discussed the threat of bureaucracy over elected government, when it complained that the King “… erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance.”

Unable to win at the ballot box, the Left has engaged in street riots, intimidation of its opposition, and the harassment of White House appointees. Once again, this was a type of action mentioned in the Declaration, when it complained that King George III “excited domestic insurrections amongst us…”

The rising acceptance of Socialism, which has miserably failed to provide sustainable prosperity wherever and whenever it has been tried, is a major rejection of the individual rights and freedoms Americans have fought and died for in the 240 years since the Declaration of Independence was first signed.

Whether we will continue to be guided by its principles is now in serious contention.

Trump Seeks to Restore U.S. Leadership in Space

In the early days of the American republic, U.S. leaders chose to look towards the future, despite the many immediate challenges they faced. Despite the perilous financial position the nation faced, President Thomas Jefferson chose to purchase the vast Louisiana territory from France. As History.com notes, “westward expansion was the key to the nation’s health.”  The Author of the Declaration of Independence didn’t stop there. The U.S. National Archives explains:   “After the Louisiana Purchase Treaty was made, Jefferson initiated an exploration of the newly purchased land and the territory beyond the “great rock mountains” in the West. He chose Meriwether Lewis to lead an expedition, who in turn solicited the help of William Clark. Together they formed a diverse military Corps of Discovery that would undertake a two-year journey to the great ocean.”

America faces a similar choice in the 21st Century.  Two successive presidents have made starkly different choices.  Obama chose the course not taken by President Jefferson: He basically declined to move vigorously ahead in opening up the nations next great frontier, space.    It was not only manned space flight that had been slashed by the Obama White House.  The Planetary Society wrote during the former president’s term “The [Obama] Administration’s [space]budget would force NASA to walk away from planned missions to Mars, delay flagship missions to the outer planets for decades, and gradually slow the pace of scientific discovery… the United States will walk away from decades of greatness in space science and exploration.  More than that, the U.S. will lose expertise, capability and talent…we’ll quickly stop producing scientists, technicians, and engineers that can lead.”

President Obama’s last NASA budget did little to change the disappointing fact that America’s returned to crewed space flight in a NASA vehicle won’t take place  until 2023. In fact, his final space funding proposal represented a 1.3%, $300 million reduction from the prior year. There was much controversy in Obama’s diversion of funding within the space agency from its traditional mission of manned space flight, while dramatically, to the tune of $2 billion, increasing Earth Science research by 70% over the years, mostly to advance Mr. Obama’s climate change agenda.

In discussing Obama’s final NASA budget, House space subcommittee chair Steven Palazzo (R-Miss.) noted: “It is no secret that this Committee is concerned that the support within NASA for the [Space Launch System] and Orion (a manned spacecraft) is not matched by the Administration. While this lack of commitment is somewhat puzzling, it is not at all surprising. [President Obama] has made clear that he does not believe space exploration is a priority for the nation and has allowed political appointees within the administration to manipulate the course of our human space flight program. These decisions should be made by the scientists, engineers, and program managers that have decades of experience in human space flight…The Administration has consistently requested large reductions for these programs despite the insistence of Congress that they be priorities.”

Mark Whittington, writing for The Hill  states:

“To understand the task that the president and whomever he chooses as NASA administrator have before them, it is useful to look back on how profoundly and adroitly President Barack Obama crippled the space agency’s efforts to send astronauts beyond low Earth orbit…Congress, which had not been consulted, reacted with bipartisan fury. The Obama administration made two critical errors. It had not consulted with Congress or anyone else when it developed its plans…Nowhere in the Obama plan was there a commitment to send astronauts anywhere. Clearly, the White House had no intention of doing space exploration. President Obama had expressed an antipathy to American exceptionalism, and nothing speaks to that quality than American astronauts exploring other worlds.”

Sweden Responds to Russian Threat

Sweden, long associated with nonalignment in the Cold War, a peaceful foreign policy, and an armed force that had come rather close to being barely existent, is taking a dramatic turn.

Faced with Vladimir Putin’s expansionist goals, aggressive actions, and vastly strengthened military, Stockholm is seeking to rapidly prepare its defenses for the threatening times ahead.  That includes both rebuilding its own depleted defenses and moving closer to NATO. It currently serves as an “Enhanced Opportunity Partner” within the organization.

According to NATO,  “In response to the deteriorating security situation, Sweden is taking steps not only to enhance its warfighting capability but also to increase the resilience of society. The government appointed a Defence Commission in 2017 to look beyond current issues with a view to calibrating the country’s future defence policy and posture. A recent report from the Commission focuses specifically on the need to prepare the whole of society for the worst-case scenario of war… The security situation in Northern Europe has deteriorated since Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014. There is now a growing realisation among NATO members and partners alike that challenges to European security and the rules-based international order must be met by rapidly transforming our defence postures… Consequently, the key priority of the present Swedish Defence Bill, passed in 2015, is to enhance the warfighting capability of the Armed Forces.

Defense News  reports that Sweden has increased its military budget by 11% over the past five years. Its government has even re-instituted the draft.

A Swedish publication, The Local  reports that the nation is attempting to double its defense budget by 2035. A new report from the Swedish military  estimates that the total to do that, the defence budget will have to be increased from today’s 53 billion kronor ($6.5 billion) a year to around 115 billion kronor a year by 2035. The Swedish military believes that “There are several reasons to further develop the military defence. The geopolitical global development is unpredictable. Russia has through its actions in Georgia and Ukraine showed that they do not hesitate to use military force. They also plan to increase their military capabilities after 2020. Further reasons are that the society is more vulnerable to strain and warfare targets society as a whole,” an Armed Forces statement reads.

Sweden has been moving closer to NATO, in response to Moscow’s significant threats. Putin has moved air and missile forces close to Sweden, and is considering deploying much of its large tactical nuclear forces to the region as well. Russia possesses a ten to one advantage over the U.S. in tactical nuclear weapons.  Moscow has engaged in simulated attacks on Sweden, and its intelligence forces constitute an ongoing threat. The Local  notes that “A poll released in October 2015 suggested that 41 percent of Swedes are in favor of seeking membership in the military defense alliance, 39 percent are against the idea and 20 percent are uncertain.”

As noted previously in the New York Analysis of Policy & Government, “The Scandinavian nation has already participated in some of the alliances’ activities.  Swedish forces joined with the NATO Response Force …in a joint training exercise.  Finland and Ukraine (this was before the invasion) also participated.  Both Finland and Sweden have moved closer to the alliance, participating in key exercises and permitting NATO forces to be deployed within their nations.

[Former] NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmssen said that the relationship between the alliance and Sweden “is already strong.” Like the other NATO nations, Sweden had seriously weakened its defense capabilities in the aftermath of the Soviet Union’s collapse, according to Defense News. It has been estimated that the nation has only a quarter of the capabilities it had during the Cold War era. Russia has engaged in provocative activities, including simulated attacks on Sweden.  That forced a new look at the diminished capability of the nation’s armed forces, which reportedly could only endure a week in the face of an attack by Moscow. However, in the wake of the Ukrainian invasion and Russia’s enormous rebuilding of its military might, it is both re-examining its own military capabilities as well as the advantages of joining NATO.”

Ties between Stockholm and Washington have been moving closer for some time.  Last August, U.S. military personnel participated in Exercise Aurora 2017, a Swedish national exercise designed to strengthen regional defense capabilities. It was the largest such exercise hosted by Sweden in more than 20 years.

Sweden, along with Finland (both non-NATO members) will participate in NATO’s largest military exercise (“Trident Fall”)  in recent years, which will take place in Norway this fall.
