Ignoring Evidence, by Pretending it is Not Evidence

This article was submitted exclusively to the New York Analysis of Policy and Government by the distinguished jurist Judge John H. Wilson (ret.)

If you paid attention to the mainstream media and their supporters, you would believe there is no evidence in existence whatsoever that voter fraud occurred in the 2020 election, or that voter fraud even exists on anything but a minor level.  Before the election even occurred, the Brennan Center for Justice issued a report claiming that, “(s)ensationalist claims have circulated this election season about the extent of voter fraud, with some politicians going so far as to tell voters to fear that this November’s election will be ‘rigged’…putting rhetoric aside to look at the facts makes clear that fraud by voters at the polls is vanishingly rare, and does not happen on a scale even close to that necessary to “rig” an election.”

After the election, other statements were made in the same vein.  “There is no evidence that any voting system deleted or lost votes, changed votes or was in any way compromised,’ according to a joint statement issued by the Election Infrastructure Government Coordinating Council.”

According to Newsmax, “(t)here is no evidence of widespread fraud in the 2020 election. In fact, election officials from both political parties have stated publicly that the election went well and international observers confirmed that there were no serious irregularities.  The issues Trump’s campaign and its allies have pointed to are typical in every election.”

According to the New York Times, “(e)lection officials in dozens of states representing both political parties said that there was no evidence that fraud or other irregularities played a role in the outcome of the presidential race.”

Well, that must be the end of the issue – if the New York Times says so, then it must be true!

Yet, why do allegations of fraud continue to surround this election?  More important, is there any actual evidence of fraud, or could the mainstream media be telling us the truth this time?

To understand the disconnect between the left and the right on this issue, we first need to comprehend what actually constitutes evidence that would be admissible in a court of law.

According to the American Bar Association, ‘(t)he heart of (any) case is the presentation of evidence. There are two types of evidence — direct and circumstantial.  Direct evidence usually is that which speaks for itself: eyewitness accounts, a confession, or a weapon.  Circumstantial evidence usually is that which suggests a fact by implication or inference: the appearance of the scene of a crime, testimony that suggests a connection or link with a crime, physical evidence that suggests criminal activity.  Both kinds of evidence are a part of most trials, with circumstantial evidence probably being used more often than direct. Either kind of evidence can be offered in oral testimony of witnesses or physical exhibits, including fingerprints, test results, and documents. Neither kind of evidence is more valuable than the other.”

Based upon this definition, there is clearly evidence, both direct and circumstantial, for the allegations made regarding voter fraud in the 2020 election.

According to Newsmax, “Republican National Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel told Fox Business Network’s Maria Bartiromo that the RNC has collected 12,000 incident reports of election-related irregularities and malfeasance.  What might constitute even stronger evidence are the 400 affidavits submitted by eyewitnesses in swing states whose vote results are in dispute. These affiants have placed their observations on paper, from the fishy to the fraudulent.”

These affidavits have been gathered at a website called Here is the Evidence.

COVID and the Defense Budget

COVID-19 has impacted the military, as it has almost every other facet of life.

The House of Representatives has produced a defense budget (called the National Defense Authorization Act) in the face of deep challenges, some difficult because of the potential change in Administrations, and some wholly precedented due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The two parties reached an agreement on over 2,200 individual provisions. House Armed Services Committee Chairman Adam Smith (D-Wash.) and Ranking Member Mac Thornberry (R-Texas), issued a joint statement noting “The agreement we have reached includes important provisions affecting our national security. Among the provisions we are most proud of the authorization of hazardous duty pay for our service members in harm’s way, improvements to military housing and programs for military families with children with special needs, addressing the shortage in military child care, authorizing $8.4 billion in military construction projects to fortify critical infrastructure and base realignment and closure clean up , important new tools to deter China and Russia, reforms to make the Pentagon more efficient, innovative, and cost-effective, significant bipartisan provisions on artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, and provisions that strengthen our alliance with Israel. After the tragic loss of life in Pensacola last year, the NDAA also includes a prohibition on foreign student’s ability to possess firearms on military bases.”

COVID played a significant role in this year’s budget. The defense bill provides service members with the diagnostic equipment, testing capabilities and PPE they need, along with providing medical surge capacity in certain healthcare facilities; and it provides health benefits to members of the National Guard that supported the COVID-19 response.

The military’s role in COVID is more than just protecting its own.  The military will play a central role I distributing the vaccine, produced in record-breaking time thanks to the Trump Administration’s “Operation Warp Speed.” C. Todd Lopez, speaking for the Department of Defense, reports that the Pentagon has “the best logisticians in the world working in conjunction with the CDC, to guide every logistical detail you could possibly think of.” That effort involves things such as needles, syringes, swabs, adhesive bandages, dry ice and trucks, to name key examples. Operations centers, similar to those set up for hurricanes, will manage the effort.

Of course, the key focus will continue to be protecting the U.S. from the massive and growing threats from China and Russia.

The NDAA authorizes DoD nuclear weapons modernization programs and National Nuclear Security Administration infrastructure and weapons programs absolutely required to replace aging systems with diminishing reliability and survivability concerns that undermine the safety, security and effectiveness of the nation’s most important Defense capability – the Nuclear Deterrent. The bill also directs the production of an unclassified study of the nuclear weapons programs of Russia, China, North Korea and Iran, so that the American people can be informed about the threats to the United States.

It also establishes the Pacific Deterrence Initiative which includes $2.2 billion of investments and new programs to modernize and strengthen U.S. posture and capability in the Indo-Pacific region and assist U.S. allies and partners to deter against Chinese malign behavior. The NDAA supports U.S. efforts to help Taiwan develop capable, ready, and modern defense forces necessary for it to maintain a sufficient self-defense capability.

Closer to home, The legislature includes a requirement for a Presidential assessment on how to deter Chinese industrial espionage and large-scale cyber theft of intellectual property and personal information, and mandates that public reporting of Chinese military companies operating in the United States be published on the Federal Register.

The measure must be approved by the Senate and the White House.       Critical National Security Measures Included In The NDAA

COVID-19 Protections:    COVID placed a significant role. The defense bill provides service members with the diagnostic equipment, testing capabilities and PPE they need, along with providing medical surge capacity in certain healthcare facilities; and it provides health benefits to members of the National Guard that supported the COVID-19 response.

Hazardous Duty Pay:
 The NDAA includes the annual re-authorization of the extra pay owed to troops deployed in combat zones.

Safe and Reliable Nuclear Deterrent:
 The NDAA authorizes DoD nuclear weapons modernization programs and National Nuclear Security Administration infrastructure and weapons programs absolutely required to replace aging systems with diminishing reliability and survivability concerns that undermine the safety, security and effectiveness of the nation’s most important Defense capability – the Nuclear Deterrent. The NDAA also directs the production of an unclassified study of the nuclear weapons programs of Russia, China, North Korea and Iran, so that the American people can be informed about the threats to the United States.

Deterring Russia:
The NDAA prohibits future administrations from implementing any activity that recognizes the sovereignty of Russia over Crimea and extends the limitation on military cooperation between the United States and Russia. The NDAA establishes mandatory sanctions on Turkey for its acquisition of the S-400 air missile defense system as required by CAATSA, and expands sanctions related to the construction of Russia’s Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

Cybersecurity:
 The NDAA adopts 17 Cyber Solarium Commission recommendations that strengthen the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and empowers the government to better protect against cyber-attack.

Fighting Terrorists:
 The NDAA contains multiple authorities to train and equip partners, including Afghan, Iraqi, and other forces. By building their capabilities to fight terrorism and provide their own security, we reduce the need to commit US forces. In response to the attack in Pensacola in December 2019, where a foreign student killed three people, the NDAA requires a more thorough process for vetting foreign students’ access to military bases and prohibits foreign students’ possession of firearms on military bases. The NDAA carries traditional prohibitions against future Presidents ordering the transfer of terrorist detainees currently held at GTMO to the United States and includes special visas for Afghan partners who put their lives on the line supporting US troops.

Maintaining America’s Competitive Edge:
 The NDAA includes a number of measures to maintain America’s competitive edge against our adversaries, including:
Planned and urgently needed increases to the Army, Navy and Air Force end-strength;
$8 billion for new military construction that must be appropriated and authorized to get underway;
Affirms the premiere military aviation ranges at El Centro Range Complex, Fallon Range Training Complex, and Nevada Test and Training Range;
Limits the retirements of Air Force manned and unmanned ISR aircraft;
Limits the retirements of tanker, airlift, and A-10 attack aircraft;
Includes funding for a total of 93 F-35 Joint Strike Fighters;
Provides additional $2.55 billion for an additional Virginia-class attack submarine and $260.0 million for a Spearhead-class expeditionary fast transport vessel;
Provides additional $500.0 million for a new large deck amphibious ship to numerically replace the fire-stricken USS Bonhomme Richard and authorizes a multiyear amphibious ship contract that Navy anticipates would save almost $1.0 billion;
Accelerates anti-submarine warfare to counter advanced undersea threats by authorizing an additional $1.42 billion for 8 additional P-8A Poseidon aircraft and $49.1 million for additional sonobuoys;
Expands Navy logistics and Special Forces access by authorizing an additional $417.0 million to support 4 additional V-22 Osprey;
Supports the budget requests for 12 F-15EX aircraft and 24 F/A-18E/F Super Hornets, to include additional $28.0 million for Super Hornet advance procurement;
Supports the budget requests for the Army’s Future Vertical Lift efforts to include Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft and Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft; and
Provides additional $375.0 million for an additional 60 Stryker Combat Vehicles to address an identified Army unfunded requirement.

Reforming How the Pentagon Does Business: The NDAA expands reform efforts across the DOD to include the efficacy and efficiency of the Department as a whole as well as reforming the capability requirements process and weapon system sustainment activities. The NDAA establishes a new requirement for quarterly briefings on eliminating the gaps and vulnerabilities in the National Technology and Industrial Base.

Ensuring Innovation: The NDAA authorizes an additional $350 million in defense science and technology efforts to invest in emerging technologies and critical research areas including biotechnology, AI, hypersonics, and directed energy. It formalizes the “Hacking For Defense” program, and restores $40 million in funding for the program.

Artificial Intelligence: The NDAA elevates the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center as a direct report to the Deputy Secretary of Defense and adopts many National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence Commission recommendations that accelerate the DoD’s adoption of AI-enabled capabilities.
 Support For Troops And Their Families
Support for Military Families: The NDAA includes a number of reform efforts prioritized by Ranking Members Thornberry (R-TX) and Kelly (R-MS) to better support military families. These include efforts to address the childcare shortage for military families, reforms to programs that support military families with children with special needs, and improved voting access and support for overseas servicemembers and families.

Improvements to Military Family Housing: Overdue improvements include improved identification and remediation of severe environmental hazards, support for families displaced for mold and other hazards, and liaisons for families with special needs children.

Mental Healthcare: In light of high rates of military suicide, the NDAA initiates mental healthcare reforms for service-members, family members and retirees and seeks to improve the effectiveness of suicide prevention programs in the Department of Defense.

Preventing Sexual Assault and Harassment: Sexual assault and harassment continue to be a persistent issue in the military. The NDAA includes additional reforms designed to improve reporting, improve and protect the rights of victims, and provide for more effective responses for sex-related offenses.
Additional National Security Tools From Beyond The Armed Services Committees
Solidarity with Israel: The NDAA includes the United States-Israel Assistance Act.

National Emergency Alert Systems: The NDAA includes AMBER Alert nationwide Act, expanding the AMBER Alert system to include airports, maritime ports, border crossing areas and points of entry, and the Reliable Emergency Alert Distribution Improvement Act, modifying how citizens receive emergency alerts.

Keeping Faith With Our Veterans: The NDAA expands eligibility for the HUD-VA Housing Assistance Program to include veterans who were previously excluded. The NDAA also expands the ability for the VA to provide legal assistance for veterans and dependents, and healthcare via telemedicine- a vital resource for veterans during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Supporting Federal Civilian Employees: The NDAA will allow federal employees to carry over leave unused due to COVID-19. It also extends paid parental leave to the TSA and FAA.

Combats Money Laundering and Human Trafficking: The NDAA contains efforts to improve U.S. coordination and information sharing to combat international human trafficking and reauthorizes a stronger, survivor-led, U.S. Advisory Council on Human Trafficking. The NDAA also strengthens tools to combat money laundering and the financing of terrorist programs.
New Tools To Deter China in the NDAA
Pacific Deterrence Initiative (PDI): The NDAA builds on the success of the European Deterrence Initiative and It also establishes the Pacific Deterrence Initiative which includes $2.2 billion of investments and new programs to modernize and strengthen U.S. posture and capability in the Indo-Pacific region and assist U.S. allies and partners to deter against Chinese malign behavior.

Protects Against Chinese Industrial Espionage: The legislature includes a requirement for a Presidential assessment on how to deter Chinese industrial espionage and large-scale cyber theft of intellectual property and personal information, and mandates that public reporting of Chinese military companies operating in the United States be published on the Federal Register.

Defending Hong Kong: The NDAA prohibits the commercial exports of covered defense articles and services and covered munitions items to the Hong Kong Police.

Supporting Taiwan: The NDAA supports U.S. efforts to help Taiwan develop capable, ready, and modern defense forces necessary for Taiwan to maintain a sufficient self-defense capability and requires annual reports on the progress DoD is making to deny the strategic goals of a competitor against a defense partner. Cutting Off World Bank Aid: The NDAA pursues China’s graduation from World Bank assistance.

Debt Diplomacy: The NDAA includes efforts to ensure that US representatives at international financial institutions work to seek greater transparency into the terms and conditions of financing provided by the People’s Republic of China.

Protecting America’s Supply Chain: The NDAA carries protections on the defense industrial base and supply chain, including:
Expanding the prohibition for DoD on acquiring certain sensitive materials from China

Requiring Universities share information related to individuals participating in defense funded research
Limiting funding for Universities with Confucius Institutes
Requiring the disclosure of external funding for federal grants recipients.
Protecting U.S. Bases: The NDAA requires the Secretary of Defense to notify Congress of steps being taken by host countries with an at-risk 5G network, services, or software to include Huawei and ZTE, before DoD can base new weapons systems or forces in said host country.

Foreign Policy Update

Secretary Pompeo’s Participation in the NATO Foreign Ministerial

Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo participated in the December 1-2 virtual NATO Foreign Ministerial, hosted by Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.  In a productive discussion with Allied leaders, Secretary Pompeo emphasized the threat the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) poses to Allied security interests and encouraged increased cooperation to safeguard against the CCP’s malign activities.

The Secretary and his counterparts also discussed additional topics critical to the Alliance.  Allied leaders spoke candidly with the Ukrainian and Georgian Foreign Ministers about Black Sea security.  Other discussions focused on Russia, arms control, regional security, NATO 2030 and the Forward Looking Reflection Process, and strengthening shared bonds and values between NATO and its Asia-Pacific partners.

During the Foreign Ministerial, the Secretary reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to the NATO Alliance and its essential role in ensuring peace and prosperity.

The United States Welcomes Major Milestone in Afghanistan Peace Negotiations

The United States welcomes the Agreement announced December 2 by the negotiating teams from the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the Taliban.  This Agreement is a major milestone in the Afghanistan Peace Negotiations that have been underway since September 12, 2020.

The Agreement codifies the rules and procedures the two sides have been negotiating since the start of talks.  The teams made a number of important decisions that will guide their negotiations on a political roadmap and a comprehensive ceasefire.

We congratulate both sides on their perseverance and willingness to find common ground.  This achievement demonstrates that the Afghan Islamic Republic and Taliban are serious, able to overcome differences, and ready to deal with difficult issues.  What has been achieved provides hope they will succeed in reaching a political settlement to this more than forty-year-old conflict.  The United States thanks Qatar for its role as host and facilitator of the talks.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities

December 3 is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, a fitting occasion for the United States to reaffirm its commitment to, and support for, the full inclusion of persons with disabilities in daily life of the community. We point with pride to robust public and private enforcement of the Americans with Disabilities Act and to other federal, state, and local laws that guarantee open and equal access to facilities, markets, jobs, goods, and services.

It is also a fitting occasion to reaffirm that all members of the human family are “created equal, and are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” Each individual must have an equal opportunity to develop his or her unique talents and must be free to pursue their dreams.

We applaud the participation and leadership of persons with disabilities and their representative organizations in efforts to assure equal access and opportunity, and we recognize those whose vision and hard work are the basis for the technologies on which we rely to ensure that no one is left behind.

On this International Day of Persons with Disabilities, I am proud to announce the opening of the Access Center at the U.S. Department of State, an interactive facility showcasing assistive technologies that remove barriers for our employees with disabilities. The United States reaffirms our commitment to promoting and protecting the human rights of all and to achieving equal opportunity in education, employment, and participation in civic life for persons with disabilities.

U.S.-China Strategic Competition

The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission  has issued its annual report to Congress. The New York Analysis of Policy and Government will periodically present summaries of their work.

CHINA’S VIEW OF STRATEGIC COMPETITION

China is engaged in a global competition for power and influence with the United States. The ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP) regards the liberal democratic values championed by the United States as a fundamental impediment to its external ambitions and an existential threat to its domestic rule. Chinese leaders’ assessment of the United States as a dangerous and firmly committed opponent has informed nearly every facet of China’s diplomatic strategy, economic policy, and military planning in the post-Cold War era. Although elements of this competition have been evident for some time, under General Secretary of the CCP Xi Jinping the competition has intensified.

Through its modernization efforts, China has emerged as an unprecedented economic rival and a growing military threat capable of inflicting grave harm on the United States and its allies and partners.

China’s economic engagement with the United States has proved to be a critical enabler of its rapid economic growth, steadily feeding Beijing’s confidence in its ability to act on its longstanding ambition to match and ultimately displace the United States as the predominant global leader. Meanwhile, Beijing has intensified its diplomatic efforts, underpinned by an increased use of economic and military coercion, to drive wedges between Washington and its allies.

Strategic competition with China presents an increasing challenge for the United States. As Chinese leaders have perceived the power gap between China and the United States as steadily closing, they have become increasingly confident in their ability to expand the reach of the CCP’s authoritarian values and repression to the detriment of the United States, its workers, businesses, and allies. Continued success by the Chinese government in achieving its economic, diplomatic, and military goals could set back U.S. economic and technological progress for decades at the cost of good jobs and shared prosperity, embolden autocrats and dictators around the world, and obstruct U.S. military support to U.S. allies and partners in the Indo-Pacific in the event of a future conflict.

Key Findings

▶ Beijing has long held the ambition to match the United States as  the world’s most powerful and influential nation. Over the past  15 years, as its economic and technological prowess, diplomatic  influence, and military capabilities have grown, China has turned its  focus toward surpassing the United States. Chinese leaders have  grown increasingly aggressive in their pursuit of this goal following  the 2008 global financial crisis and General Secretary Xi’s ascent  to power in 2012.

It would be one thing if you had a long hectic day and you are feeling shy and are not confident enough to purchase free viagra tablet from a pharmacist in your locality are common fever, asthma, high and low-blood pressure, dizziness, headache, arthritis, and more. City Physiotherapy Centre will deal thoroughly respitecaresa.org acquisition de viagra and comprehensively with all your needs. Though ED is common, it vardenafil cost is really stressful. Faith is respitecaresa.org viagra prescription undoubtedly on it’s own an incredible healer.

▶ Chinese leaders regard the United States as China’s primary  adversary and as the country most capable of preventing the CCP  from achieving its goals. Over the nearly three decades of the post Cold War era, Beijing has made concerted efforts to diminish the  global strength and appeal of the United States. Chinese leaders  have become increasingly active in seizing opportunities to present  the CCP’s one-party, authoritarian governance system and values  as an alternative model to U.S. global leadership.

▶ China’s approach to competition with the United States is based  on the CCP’s view of the United States as a dangerous ideological  opponent that seeks to constrain its rise and undermine the  legitimacy of its rule. In recent years, the CCP’s perception of the  threat posed by Washington’s championing of liberal democratic  ideals has intensified as the Party has reemphasized the ideological  basis for its rule.

▶ Beijing views economic competition with the United States in the  context of its broader economic development strategy. Beginning in  2006, the United States, as the global economic and technological  leader, became a target to chase and surpass as the CCP fostered  domestic production and innovation through successive waves of  industrial plans (see Figure 1).

▶ In China’s most recent industrial policy wave, set by the 2016 Innovation Driven Development Strategy, which includes the Made in China 2025  plan, policymakers have promoted the development of China’s digital  ecosystem and accompanying regulatory architecture. The CCP believes  China faces a rare historic opportunity to establish control over a cluster  of revolutionary, networked technologies, including high-speed internet,  sensors, telecommunications, artificial intelligence, robotics, and smart  city infrastructure. Doing so could allow Beijing to leapfrog the United  States and other powerful competitors and lead in the next generation  of global innovation.

▶ The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) views the U.S. military as its primary  strategic adversary and has engaged in long-term efforts to close the  wide capability gap with U.S. military power since the mid-1990s. In  2004, the PLA shifted its focus to emphasize leapfrogging the United  States in certain warfighting areas by introducing new concepts the PLA  believed could enable it to defeat a conventionally superior opponent.

▶ The PLA’s long-term strategy to gain advantage over the U.S. military  includes developing “informationized” capabilities and exploiting  ostensibly civilian information systems, likely including those built  overseas by Chinese companies. The PLA is complementing these  efforts by developing cyberattack, space and counterspace, and  long-range precision-strike capabilities and expanding its capacity  to delay and threaten U.S. military forces at increasing distances  from China’s shores.

Attacks on Religion: Internal and External, Part 2

This article was provided to the New York Analysis of Policy and Government by Judge John H. Wilson (ret.)

Attacks on religion from within those of the same faith are growing.   Amy Klein, the former editor of the Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles, writes in the New York Post “I want to drive through Brooklyn, shouting out my car window in Yiddish, ‘Gey trog a farsholtene maske!’ Wear. A. Damn. Mask…As a Jew who has much appreciation for my more religious brothers and sisters (and who has no clue why they or anyone else flouts the medical recommendations), I urge (Governor Cuomo) to stay strong and enforce the synagogue restrictions.”  In fact, Klein goes so far as to demand that “Cuomo should also make sure…celebrations (of the holiest of days) are prohibited this year. Dancing with the Torah and other mass gatherings like it should not be allowed to happen “

There may have been a time when such restrictions could be justified.  But in a time when statistical data no longer support the need for such draconian measures, the impulse to censor the religious by the admittedly more secular members of the faith amounts to a violation of the freedom of religion guaranteed by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution.

The Jewish faith is not the only religion to suffer internal attack.  Recently, Pope Francis made the following statement during the filming of a documentary regarding the LGBT community; “Homosexuals have a right to be a part of the family. They’re children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out, or be made miserable because of it…What we have to create is a civil union law. That way they are legally covered…I stood up for that.”

While no Catholic has any serious objection to the first part of the Pope’s statement, the endorsement of civil unions has caused a firestorm within the faith.

Soon after the Pope’s statement, the Bishop of Providence, Thomas Tobin, issued the following statement; “The Holy Father’s apparent support for the recognition of civil unions for same-sex couples…clearly contradicts what has been the long-standing teaching of the Church about same-sex unions. The Church cannot support the acceptance of objectively immoral relationships…the legalization of their civil unions, which seek to simulate holy matrimony, is not admissible.”

People are using e-mail blasts to sell sex, drugs and other items of less than favourable roots. sildenafil 25mg Impotence is generally a condition where male gentile do not get erected and neither person feels sensuality.* A condition in which person is Sildamax aroused, but his gentile do deeprootsmag.org cheapest cheap viagra erect for completing physical relation.Besides, the male impotency problem, there is also issue related to female incapability.* Women incapability is the condition where a woman feels uncomfortable in being intimate with her partner.To cure such type of disability you have the. For this purpose, Horny goat weed supplements are considered as the safer and more effective alternative to http://deeprootsmag.org/category/departments/naturestemple/?feedsort=comment_count online viagra, viagra.

Meanwhile, the Cardinal of Boston, Thomas O’Malley, tried another tact.  “The Pope’s endorsement of civil unions is not an endorsement of homosexual activity…the Holy Father recognizes that in civil society there can be cogent reasons to enact such laws providing for civil unions which are not the same as the institution of marriage.  Pope Francis has seen civil unions as a way for governments to provide protections and health care for couples in long-term, committed relationships…”

As described by the Associated Press, the controversy “highlight(s)…Francis’ willingness to push his own agenda, even at the expense of fueling pushback from conservative Catholics.”  While still the archbishop of Buenos Aires, the Pope “told gay activists that ‘he favored gay rights as well as legal recognition for civil unions, which gay couples could also access.’”  This led to “a 2003 document from the Vatican’s doctrine office, which states the church’s respect for gay people ‘cannot lead in any way to approval of homosexual behavior or to legal recognition of homosexual unions.’  That document was issued after Rome criticized (the then-archbishop) for refusing to speak up strongly when Buenos Aires extended civil union protections to gay couples within the capital region.”

The inconsistency between the Pope’s position on civil unions and the Catholic doctrine the Pope is sworn to defend is a terrible, self-inflicted wound for the faithful.  If gay Catholics can receive the Church’s blessing for their civil union, what is to stop heterosexual couples from receiving the same blessing?  Why then would anyone need or want a marriage within the Church, when a civil union will be accepted?

Much like the non-religious Jews who attack their faithful brethren for following their devotions without heed to secular concerns, the Pope has also allowed his worldly outlook to color his words.  Both need to remember that the faithful have endured for thousands of years by maintaining their beliefs, and not by allowing the momentary and fleeting concerns of the present to turn them from their path.

Attacks on Religion: Internal and External

This article was provided to the New York Analysis of Policy and Government by Judge John H. Wilson (ret.)

Our modern secular society appears to have little use or respect for religion, and people of religious sentiment.  In fact, as our society becomes less respectful of God, His adherents, no matter the faith, are also treated with increasing contempt.

The faithful expect attacks to come from the unfaithful.  But when the attacks originate from internal sources, the sense of betrayal is intense.

A recent and glaring example involves the Satmar sect of Hasidic Judaism.  In October of this year, the grandchild of the grand rebbe, Zalman Leib Teitelbaum was to be wed in a synagogue in Brooklyn.  As reported by the New York Post, “Teitelbaum leads the Satmar sect in Williamsburg while his brother Aaron…heads the Satmar in the Kiryas Joel enclave in Orange County.”

The wedding of the child of such an influential rabbi could expect to be well attended – that is, until Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York State learned of this event.  In an unprecedented show of authority, “New York state issued an order barring the mass gathering, which would violate coronavirus restrictions…(t)he state limit on wedding receptions in New York City is 50 people.”

Rather than fight the order – which did provide for a hearing – according to The Forward, “The synagogue where the wedding is set to take place…issued a statement late Saturday announcing that the wedding would be for family members only — but said that had always been the plan…’It’s sad that nobody verified our plans before attacking us,’ the statement says.” Who was it that alerted Governor Cuomo of this event?  Naftuli Moster, the Executive Director of a nonprofit group called Yaffed (which states as its goal the improvement of “secular education in ultra-Orthodox and Hasidic yeshivas”), admits full responsibility.  “I was the sole voice warning, both on social media and via private channels, about this upcoming potential ‘super spreader’ event,” he writes for the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.  “(A)fter learning of this unnecessary mass event, in a community that has suffered tremendous loss due to COVID-19, I felt that I had to act. In a gathering of this size, it is almost inevitable that the virus would strike the vulnerable.”

Yet, Moster admits he had other motivations. “For years I have witnessed government officials cozying up to grand rabbis like Zalman Leib…(w)hen the mayor was asked about the progress of the yeshiva investigation which was dragging on for many years, he often responded that he was ‘working with community leaders’ who supposedly pledged improvements in the schools.  It had always been clear to me that the city is either intentionally or unwittingly being taken for a ride by leaders who in Yiddish often said they had no intention of changing a thing.”

Thus, Moster found a way to attack a powerful rabbi who he felt was unresponsive to his concerns for the secular educational needs of Orthodox Jewish children – by using the guise of concern for the health of the Orthodox Jewish community.

There is no doubt that New York State and New York City were hit particularly hard by the Chinese coronavirus.  However, according to the most recent data available as of this writing, daily cases in New York City are below 2500, with a death rate of approximately one or two people a day,  in a city with a current population of almost 19 million people.  Though we can all agreed that any death resulting from this virus is tragic, these rates are a far cry from the infection and death rates of earlier this year.

The Report concludes tomorrow.

Progressive’s “Enemy List” Imitates Stalin

This article was provided exclusively to the New York Analysis of Policy and Government by Judge John Wilson, (ret.)

If there is one socialist democrat who cannot keep a secret, it is New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortes.  Early in November, she issued this tweet – “Is anyone archiving these Trump sycophants for when they try to downplay or deny their complicity in the future?”

It didn’t take long for her fellow leftists to respond.  Thanks to AOC’s question, the nation learned about the “Trump Accountability Project” – an effort, in the group’s own words, to “make sure those members of the Trump administration responsible for loosening the guardrails of our democracy are not rewarded with book deals, TV contracts, or six-figure salaries in the private sector based on that experience.”

Predictably, as described by the Federalist, “(t)he New York representative’s tweet received backlash from conservatives, with some comparing her suggestion to the actions of previous authoritarian socialist and communist regimes.”

Also predictably, the “Trump Accountability Project” privatized its list, and now claims that “in the spirit of the President-elect’s call to build a more united country, this project will no longer be active.”

Yet, the list still exists, and in a now-deleted response to AOC’s request, former Obama campaign staffer Michael Simon answered, “Yes we are…every Administration staffer, campaign staffer, bundler, lawyer who represented them- everyone.”  Further, as noted by the Federalist, “(f)ollowing Simon’s tweet, others such as former national press secretary for the Democratic National Committee and former senior spokesman for the Obama presidential campaign Hari Sevugan as well as a former staffer for the Buttigieg Campaign Emily Abrams posted about the project, encouraging people to join their movement.”

The list makers have their supporters in the media.  Jennifer Rubin of the Washington Post tweeted that “(a)ny R(epublican) now promoting rejection of an election or calling to not to follow the will of voters or making baseless allegations of fraud should never serve in office, join a corporate board, find a faculty position or be accepted into ‘polite’ society. We have a list.”

  Another former Obama staffer, Scott Dworkin tweeted that “Trump’s entire legal team shouldn’t be allowed to practice law ever again.”  Not to be left out of the list making and expose of Trump supporters, according to Fox News, in August, “Debra Messing has joined her ‘Will & Grace’ co-star Eric McCormack in calling for the names of Trump supporters in Hollywood who’ll be attending an upcoming fundraiser for President Trump to be outed.”

Hmmm…who else in history made lists of their enemies and retaliated against them after a transition of power?

When Vladimir Lenin died in 1924, Joseph Stalin began his ruthless pursuit of power, culminating in his selection as Communist Party General Secretary of the USSR in 1929.  At the time, “some members of the former Bolshevik party began to question his authority. By the mid-1930s, Stalin believed anyone with ties to the Bolsheviks or Lenin’s government was a threat to his leadership and needed to go.” In 1934, “Stalin launched his purge, claiming that he had uncovered a dangerous conspiracy of anti-Stalinist Communists. The dictator began killing or imprisoning any suspected party dissenters, eventually eliminating all the original Bolsheviks that participated in the Russian Revolution of 1917.  Among those purged were opposing members of the Communist Party, government officials, army officers and any accomplices.”

While not known for making specific lists of his enemies, Mao Zedong may have been more ruthless than Stalin when it came to eliminating those he believed did not fully agree with his attempts to remake China. In the late 1950’s, “when he sensed that revolutionary fervor in China was waning, Mao proclaimed the Cultural Revolution. Gangs of Red Guards — young men and women between 14 and 21 — roamed the cities targeting revisionists and other enemies of the state, especially teachers.

“Professors were dressed in grotesque clothes and dunce caps, their faces smeared with ink. They were then forced to get down on all fours and bark like dogs. Some were beaten to death, some even eaten — all for the promulgation of Maoism. A reluctant Mao finally called in the Red Army to put down the marauding Red Guards when they began attacking Communist Party members, but not before 1 million Chinese died.”

Yet, this history has not stopped many on the left from quoting, and openly admiring Mao.  Current CNN commentator Van Jones famously resigned from the Obama Administration after Glenn Beck exposed his radical past, including the fact that “(i)n 1994, Mr. Jones was one of the founders of STORM, a Marxist-Leninist group whose hero was Chinese Communist dictator Mao Tse Tung.”

Even former Vice President Joe Biden has quoted Mao – when asked why he picked Kamala Harris as his running mate, he said “women hold up half the sky.”  As reported in National Review, “Biden’s reference…is in fact a well-known proclamation that Mao made to promote women leaving the home amid the Cultural Revolution in China. It was then widely used as propaganda during the ‘Great Leap Forward.’”

Then there is the example of Fidel Castro.  When he came to power in Cuba in 1959, promising reform, “(w)ithin months, Castro was imposing radical economic reforms. Members of the old government went before summary courts, and at least 582 were shot by firing squads over two years. Independent newspapers were closed and in the early years, homosexuals were herded into camps for ‘re-education.’”

Maybe you think these comparisons between Communist dictators and the words of Democratic party elected officials are “over the top” hyperbole.  If so, listen to the words of David Atkins, a California member of the Democratic National Committee “No seriously…how ‘do’ you deprogram 75 million people? Where do you start? Fox? Facebook?

Democrats are telling us what they plan to do under any Biden Administration – they are openly planning reprisals against members and supporters of the Trump Administration, and some form of re-education.  Why are we not listening, and taking them at their word?
