Is There a Relationship Between Sanctuary Policies and the Corona Virus?

Worldwide, the news is not good.  At last count, Covid-19, a flu-like illness which originated in Wuhan, China, has taken the lives of almost 20,000 people, including almost 7,000 people in Italy.  But there is some cause for hope.  Out of the almost 400,000 reported cases at the end of March, 2020, just over 100,000 people have recovered from the coronavirus.  .6

In the United States, the number of cases continues to grow.  At the end of March, 2020 there are almost 50,000 reported cases, but fortunately, only just over 500 deaths.  In New York, the hardest hit state, CNN reports there are “21,689 coronavirus cases and 157 deaths.  New York City alone has 13,119 cases. At least 2,213 of those patients are hospitalized and 525 are in the intensive care unit.” .

Washington State is credited with having the first coronavirus patient in America, diagnosed in mid-January, a man in his 30’s who had recently returned from a trip to Central China.  .  It is believed that this “Patient Zero” may have unknowingly transmitted the disease upon his arrival in Seattle from Wuhan, before he even knew he had the illness.  . At last count, Washington State has suffered 87 deaths from Covid-19.  .

To date the patient, and whether or not he is a US citizen, resident alien, or illegally present in the country, has not been revealed.

Illinois has documented a dozen deaths and just over 1200 cases at the end of March, .while California reports about 2300 cases and 43 deaths.  Meanwhile, the states with the least reported cases?  West Virginia (20), Wyoming (29), South Dakota (30), North Dakota (34) and Alaska (36). .

There is obviously a big difference between the populations of California and New York, and that of West Virginia and Wyoming.  There is also a greater population density which could account for the rapid spread of Covid-19 on the East and West coast.  But could there be another factor at work here?

There is no denying that the areas of American hardest hit by the Coronavirus are all Sanctuary Cities and States.

If you read the mainstream media, the Trump Administration is once again making poor, undocumented peoples suffer for his racist policies in a time of crisis.  According to The Guardian, “there is a widespread fear that the president’s policies have sown such fear of deportation and wariness of any contact with US authorities among immigrants – who also have greater difficulty getting healthcare – that many of them will not seek help if they fall sick with the virus.”    This fear was echoed in The Independent, which stated that “Senate Democrats, including Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, have raised concerns that immigrant communities will be deterred from seeking medical attention over fears of arrest, or of harming their chances of citizenship.”

As usual, not a single case is presented by either The Guardian or The Independent of an illegal immigrant who has failed to seek treatment for fear of being deported.  More important, there is not a single case reported of anyone who sought treatment for the Coronavirus, who was then taken into custody by ICE upon their recovery.

In fact, Jerry Klinger in the Times of Israel has a more realistic view of the situation.  He writes that “the uncontrolled flow of migrants, most of whom are economic migrants…is not a concern or crisis until the risk is unfettered, entrance to potential Coronavirus infected people…Blind admission of migrants, some of whom could be carrying disease…potentially to the good people of San Francisco, did not matter to the mother Sanctuary of Sanctuaries. But the Coronavirus…that has them scared.”

Consider, for instance, the debate over the Border Wall between Mexico and the United States.  Even before the coronavirus pandemic, Mexico had changed its tune, from providing safe passage for Central and South Americans on their way to the US border to using the Mexican National Guard to halt the progress of these same people, by force in some instances.  At this point, Mexico has agreed to close their border to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus. http

In early February, New York’s Mayor de Blasio was defending New York’s status as a Sanctuary City and attacking President Trump as “a corrupt disgrace.”    By the end of March, de Blasio was begging President Trump to use the military to deliver medical supplies to New York City.

In Los Angeles, Mayor Eric Garcetti expressed his firm opposition to cooperation with federal agents.  By St Patrick’s Day, the Mayor had issued his own demand for increased federal aid to combat the coronavirus outbreak.

For sheer hypocrisy, few can beat the Mayor of Seattle, Jenny Durkan, who in April of 2019, told the President that her city was “not afraid of immigrants,” and bragged about all the programs Seattle had in place to assist immigrants.    She also expressed her opposition to the increase in ICE raids in her city.

Yet, when Mayor Durkan announced that Seattle would spend $1.5 million on providing grants to “businesses owned by immigrants, refugees, people of color and non-English speakers in neighborhoods dealing with displacement and gentrification,” she never thanked the source of that money – the Federal Community Development Block Grant Program.

These Mayors, and the Governors of their states, bravely opposed the use of federal funds and federal law enforcement as they declared their support for Sanctuary policies.  “All are welcome, legal and illegal,” they stated.  But now that a little-understood and deadly disease has begun to take its toll on their populations, these same politicians stand with their hands out, begging the same federal government to exercise its power to the fullest.

The Coronavirus is proof you cannot have it both ways.  You cannot have an open border, where no one is screened for foreign pathogens, and a healthy city and state. You cannot have a Sanctuary City or State, determined to make your own anti-federal policy, and then beg the same federal government for assistance when your own policy fails you.

Or can you?  President Trump has not conditioned aid to Sanctuary Cities like New York and Los Angles on their reversing their policies.  Instead, he has signed off on several bills all intended to ease the physical and economic suffering of all Americans at this time, without conditions.

So, who in fact is the “corrupt disgrace?”  A Sanctuary City or State that failed to guard the health and safety of its citizens?  The Mayor or Governor of those cities and states who now demands action from the government who’s laws they won’t follow?  A strong argument can be made for the answer, “all of the above.”

Covid Coverup

In the 2016 presidential campaign, candidate Donald Trump’s position that America was in danger from the reality that key items, such as pharmaceuticals, were manufactured abroad, particularly in China, was stridently attacked both by his political foes and the media.

His warning has proved prophetic, but his Democratic opposition and their newsroom allies  have done their best to both cover up that fact, and their own negligence in the spread of the deadly Covid-19 pandemic.

In January 2020, President Trump issued a proclamation suspending entry into the United States of those who pose a risk of transmitting the Covid-19 virus. The President noted that:

“During Fiscal Year 2019, an average of more than 14,000 people traveled to the United States from China each day, via both direct and indirect flights…The potential for widespread transmission of the virus by infected individuals seeking to enter the United States threatens the security of our transportation system and infrastructure and the national security.  Given the importance of protecting persons within the United States from the threat of this harmful communicable disease, I have determined …to restrict and suspend the entry .… of all aliens who were physically present within the People’s Republic of China…into the United States.  I have also determined that the United States should take all necessary and appropriate measures to facilitate orderly medical screening and, where appropriate, quarantine of persons allowed to enter the United States who may have been exposed to this virus.”

Media and Democrat reaction was swift and harsh. On February 1, Joe Biden tweeted “We need to lead the way with science — not Donald Trump’s record of hysteria, xenophobia, and fear-mongering. He is the worst possible person to lead our country through a global health emergency.”

In a television interview, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) opposed the President’s move. He insisted that he would not close the borders, and condemned the White House move as xenophobic.

In February, notes National Review, Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) , concerned over the extraordinary virulence of Covid-19, openly questioned China’s lack of transparency about the disease and its origin.  He was widely smeared by the media.

President Trump ordered the Naval hospital ship Comfort to report to New York. MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow ridiculed the timing of the move, claiming it would take “weeks” for the vessel to arrive. It docked in NYC just 10 days later.  She issued no retraction or apology.

In New York City, the current epicenter of the pandemic, the media has been silent on the blatant culpability of Democrat Mayor de Blasio’s key role in allowing Covid-19 to devastate the Big Apple. He refused to close down public schools, considerably after other municipalities had already done so. He only relented in the face of a threatened law suit by teachers. In January and February, his health commissioner, Oxiris Barbot, said “We are encouraging New Yorkers to go about their everyday lives …those who had recently traveled from Wuhan were not being urged to self-quarantine or avoid large public gatherings.” On February 2nd, she added “The risk to New Yorkers for Coronavirus is low, and our preparedness as a city is very high. There is no reason not to take the subway, not to take the bus, not to go out to your favorite restaurant”

As the Trump Administration and responsible political leaders sought to frame legislation aimed at reducing the dire financial predicament affecting Americans as a result of the pandemic, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi shamelessly sought to use the opportunity to fund a host of Democrat pet political projects.  Again, the media gave Democrats a pass.

Partisanship is an unfortunate reality in politics. There are times, however, when a crisis of sufficient magnitude mandates putting it aside.  As America reels under an unprecedented threat, the inability or refusal of the Democratic Party and its media allies to do so deserves universal condemnation.

Foreign Policy Update

TAIWAN

Since normalizing relations with the People’s Republic of China the United States has been pressured by China to oppose Taiwan’s participation in international organizations, including those related to global health. Although Washington continues to have a presence in Taiwan through the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), it has not pushed hard to Taiwan to participate as a full member of the global community. It appears this is beginning to change. The Trump Administration is expanding meetings with Taiwanese officials, American ships are patrolling regularly through the Taiwan Strait and now the State Department is holding a virtual forum with the Taiwan Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO) and the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs to examine ways to expand Taiwan’s participation in global affairs.

According to the Office of the Spokesperson at the State Department, the March 31 discussions focused on creating forums to share the successful Taiwan Model on fighting COVID-19 with countries around the world. In addition, participants also discussed ongoing efforts to reinstate Taiwan’s observer status at the World Health Assembly, as well as other avenues for closer coordination between Taiwan and the World Health Organization. Although China objects vociferously to any contact between the US and Taiwan, the Trump Administration continues to make efforts to include Taiwan where possible. The COVID-19 effort is an example of how the world can benefit from the Taiwan Model and contribute to the global community.

IRAN

US Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom, Sam Brownback, has called on Iran to release all of its prisoners of conscience and those in prison for their religious views. He said that the Covid-19 virus is particularly lethal to those in poor health and crowded unsanitary spaces, such as those found in Iran’s notorious prisons. He acknowledged that the regime has released some prisoners due to the virus’ rapid spread but that many remain behind bars due simply to their personal beliefs.

In addition, the State Department Spokesperson, Morgan Ortagus, announced the US is renewing four restrictions on the Iranian regime’s nuclear program for an additional 60 days.  Ortagus said: “Iran’s continued expansion of nuclear activities is unacceptable. The regime’s nuclear extortion is among the greatest threats to international peace and security.  As President Trump said earlier this year, Iran will never be allowed to have a nuclear weapon. We will continue to use the full range of our diplomatic and economic tools to constrain Iran’s destabilizing proliferation activities. We will continue to closely monitor all developments in Iran’s nuclear program and can adjust these restrictions at any time.”

ASEAN

The United States is recognized as the global leader when it comes to health and humanitarian responses. It is no different with the current COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the country’s own crisis, it acted swiftly to support its ASEAN partners in combating the COVID-19 virus. To date the US government has provided approximately $18.3 million in emergency health and humanitarian assistance to ASEAN member states.

As of last week the US has provided nearly $274 million in emergency health and humanitarian assistance to help countries in need, on top of the funding it already provides to multilateral organizations such as the World Health Organization and UNICEF. US tax dollars are going to the ASEAN nations to prepare laboratories for large-scale testing for COVID-19, infection prevention and control, to enable risk communication, implement public-health emergency plans for border points of entry, activate case-finding and event-based surveillance for influenza-like illnesses, to train and equip rapid-responders in investigation and contact-tracing, and to update training materials for health workers.

VENEZUELA

Secretary of State Michael Pompeo is working on issues in addition to the global pandemic. On March 31, the United States proposed a pathway to resolving Venezuela’s crisis by means of a peaceful, democratic transition.  This framework, he said, calls for the establishment of broadly acceptable transitional government to administer free and fair presidential elections and a pathway to lifting Venezuela-related U.S. sanctions.

Pompeo noted that US sanctions will remain in effect, and increase, until the Maduro regime accepts a genuine political transition. The urgency has increased given the impact of the COVID-19 global pandemic.

China, Covid-19, and Lies

Most people agree a lie is an untruth. But who gets to decide what constitutes the truth? In the case of the China Covid-19 pandemic we hear competing “truths” coming from the country’s political leadership. Reports initially attributed the virus to a wet market in Wuhan that sold disease-ridden bats to unsuspecting consumers. When it was investigated further by foreign media working in the area, and the unbiased truth came out, those reporters were expelled from the country.

The reporters found it is not the custom of the local Wuhan population to eat bats. The specific bat blamed doesn’t live within 900 miles of the marketplace. And, there are two local virology laboratories in the province conducting research on very deadly corona-type viruses, of which Covid-19 is a new variety. A designated “Level 4” military-operated lab, that should have been able to handle the world’s most deadly bugs, lies only an hour away from the epicenter. Another lab experimenting on viruses is literally within a couple of miles of the suspected ground zero location.

The free flow of information, which often challenges the leadership in a democratic nation, is not permitted in China. It is outlawed. The belief of the leadership is that the truth reporters write about could potentially threaten the unity of the state and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). That is bad for the CCP, stability in the country, and the legacy of President Xi Jinping. This was the perceived threat with the Covid-19 virus outbreak reporting. Thus, the so-called truth needed to evolve, according to the Chinese leadership.

News stories quickly emerged from Xinhua, the Chinese state media organ, reporting that the US military was to blame for the global pandemic. This new truth was fabricated as the means to achieve the Party’s end goal. China went to war waging a battle of words in an attempt to reshape the narrative and place blame far from its shores.

Extensive use of planted social media news, tainted broadcasts on Chinese TV and radio, and public announcements from the head of the World Health Organization enabled China to gain some traction. Don’t forget, the Chinese supported the leader of WHO, which enabled him to get his position. He owed them! The CCP leadership all were instantly on board with the new truth. The Chinese propaganda machine works fast, is extensive, acts aggressively, and serves as a tool of President Xi to achieve his end goals.

The CCP and its top leadership, including President Xi, are experts at misinformation, disinformation, and propaganda. Coverage of the Covid-19 virus reporting is no exception. When the global media began to question China’s initial handling of the outbreak they went to work with several objectives in mind. The CCP determined it needed to focus on securing the Party’s legitimacy in the eyes of the Chinese population and ensure its future, singular hold over the country. President Xi also needed to protect his legacy and keep the reorganization and modernization programs on track.World leaders need to recognize the extent to which the CCP will stretch, or create, a “new truth” to fit its purposes. If the world is to prepare itself to handle this and future pandemics there must be transparency and the free flow of information. Over 2,500 years ago Sun Tzu wrote that warfare is the way (Dao) of deception. If China is willing to put the health of the world at risk then, perhaps, it is time to reconsider whether the west has been duped into believing falsely the government of China is benign and a lao pengyou, “old-friend,” we recently rediscovered.

The 1619 Fraud

The origins of the American Revolution are not mysterious.  Since the first English settlement in North America in 1607, the vast distance between the New World and England meant that the colonists were essentially on their own when it came to regulating their affairs.  As a result, they gained a measure of self-government far surpassing anything that existed in Europe.

Following the French and Indian War of 1754-1763, however, England, for purposes of revenue, sought to increase its measure of control over the colonies, particularly in the area of taxation.  The inhabitants of the 13 colonies objected, and, in response, London imposed a series of laws and measures which stripped British America of its now traditional liberties. The government sent troops, the colonists fought back, and the War for Independence began.

That quest to maintain freedom clashes with the modern world-view of leftist politicians and pundits. In 2019, the New York Times commenced what is known as the “1619 Project,” a reinterpretation of how the United States came to be.  Its main idea is that the central theme of America, both in its founding and development, has been the institution of slavery. “If you want to understand the brutality of American capitalism, you have to start on the plantation,” states Mathew Desmond, an architect of this faulty perspective. The concept is wholly unsupported by the facts. It is little more than an attempt to prop up those who seek to impose socialism on the nation, despite the century-old utter failure, economically and politically, of that mode of governance.

These exercises expand tadalafil india 20mg good service the muscles.

In a review of the 1619 Project in the Atlantic Adam Serwer wrote  “Princeton historian Sean Wilentz, who had criticized the 1619 Project’s ‘cynicism’ in a lecture in November, began quietly circulating a letter objecting to the project… The letter refers to ‘matters of verifiable fact’ that ‘cannot be described as interpretation or ‘framing’ and says the project reflected ‘a displacement of historical understanding by ideology.”

Cole Carnock, writing in the Free Beacon notes that Bob Woodson, a leader in the African-American community who has spent his career fighting to stave off the cycle of poverty and crime, argued…that the 1619 Project’s message—that life outcomes for African Americans are shaped by the history of slavery and Jim Crow—is a “lethal” narrative that perpetuates a culture of victimhood in the African-American community. During the launch of his new 1776 initiative, named for the year America was founded, Woodson said the new group would challenge those who assert America is forever defined by past failures.”

The fact that this ludicrous concept has been developed in these times when there is a significant push by the left to institute a socialist regime in the U.S. is not surprising.  What is deeply disturbing is this overtly fictitious perspective is being pushed by those responsible for educating our children.

The Western Journal’s Randy Soto reports that “The New York Times’ 1619 Project … has been adopted in 3,500 classrooms across all 50 states. For this reason, some of the nation’s most renowned historians have called for The Times to correct this and other factual errors… The preposterous notion that protecting slavery was one of the ‘primary’ reasons the American Colonies declared independence is not supported by the documentary evidence from the period, either, as my research for my book ‘We Hold These Truths’ made clear. Any middle school history student should be taught that the Stamp Act in 1765, followed by the Declaratory Act in 1766, were what began rallying colonists against Mother England. In the Declaratory Act, Parliament claimed the legislative body held ‘full power and authority to make laws and statutes of sufficient force and validity to bind the colonies and people of America … in all cases whatsoever.’ The rallying cry in the Colonies became, ‘No taxation without representation.’”

For far too long, Americans have not challenged the abuse of the nation’s educational system by leftist interests.  Public schools and universities have essentially stolen taxpayer dollars for partisan pollical causes. The 1619 project is the latest example, and one of the worst.

America Lags in Nuclear Weaponry

The United States faces an array of threats from near-peer competitors China and Russia that have not been seen since before the fall of the Berlin Wall, according to Matthew P. Donovan, acting undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness. In testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee, Donovan emphasized that the character of warfare has evolved, noting that “grave threats [are] now appearing in previously unknown or uncontested domains, such as cyber and space.”

The United States maintains a nuclear arsenal that consists of ground-based, air-launched and sea-launched weapons, commonly called the “nuclear triad,” which is the centerpiece of the U.S. nuclear deterrent. However, that triad is fast approaching the end of its service life and must quickly be replaced before it’s lost.

The era when the only apparent threat faced was from non-nuclear powers such as Iraq and various terrorist organizations is over.  Russia now possesses the world’s most powerful nuclear arsenal, and China has developed a nuclear arsenal that soon may rival that possessed by the U.S.  Indeed, both those powers have developed ultramodern atomic forces, while those possessed by America are decades old. In addition, North Korea has developed a nuclear arsenal, and Iran may not be far behind.  Iran and North Korea have worked together in the development of nuclear weapons technology.

Victorino G. Mercado, Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for Strategy, Plans and Capabilities testified on that issue before the House Armed Services Committee’s Subcommittee on Strategic Forces.

He emphasized that efforts to replace the aging triad are not part of an arms race.

“The U.S. seeks only what it needs to maintain a credible nuclear deterrent,” he said. “In contrast to Russia, who maintains about 2,000 non-strategic nuclear weapons and are pursuing and fielding other novel nuclear capabilities, we have no desire or intent to engage in an arms race nor match weapon-for-weapon the capabilities being fielded by Russia.”

The DOD’s fiscal year 2021 budget request for nuclear forces, Mercado said, is $28.9 billion, or 4.1% of the total DOD request. The funding request to modernize the existing triad is about 1.7% of the budget request, he added. “The nation’s nuclear modernization program is affordable.”

Mercado emphasized that after decades of deferred modernization, the U.S. must move ahead with modernizing its nuclear forces. Additionally, as defined in the Nuclear Posture Review, the U.S. must also pursue additional flexibility with systems like the sea-launched cruise missile, he said, “to ensure that there are no gains to be made through the use of any nuclear weapon, strategic or otherwise.”

As part of the modernization of the triad, the DOD is asking for around $2.8 billion for the B-21 Raider long-range strike bomber. The Air Force eventually expects to purchase 100 of the aircraft, which will carry the B61-12 and B83 nuclear gravity bombs, as well as the long-range standoff cruise missile. The Department also seeks funds for the procurement of the Columbia-class ballistic submarine for $4.4 billion and the ground-based strategic deterrent for $1.5 billion. The ground-based strategic deterrent is expected to replace about 400 Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles.

“Nuclear attack is the only existential threat to the United States, and our nuclear arsenal is the nation’s only ultimate insurance policy against such an attack,” Mercado said. “Our nuclear triad underwrote every U.S. military operation around the world and also provided extended deterrence guarantees to over 30 allies and partners, precluding the need for them to pursue their own nuclear arsenals. This is the return on investment of our nuclear forces.”

A Heritage study noted that “David Trachtenberg, Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, testified in March 2019: ‘Overall, the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile has drawn down by more than 85 percent from its Cold War high…Unfortunately Russia and China have chosen a different path and have increased the role of nuclear weapons in their strategies and actively increased the size and sophistication of their nuclear forces.”
