Tribalism in America, & Ferguson

Throughout much of the world, tribalism—loyalty, above all else, to the particular clan, ethnic group or race into which one is born—has caused devastating harm.

In Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa and of course, the Middle East, tribalism has wreaked havoc. It is the direct antithesis of modern society, and rejects concepts of objective law, impartial and fair government, and most importantly, individual rights.

Given the clear and abundant evidence of tribalism’s horrific impact on so much of the planet, why are so many in the U.S. Progressive movement and the left generally increasingly wedded to it?  Evidence of this disturbing trend can be seen in recent disturbances, the latest example being in Ferguson, Missouri.

In the aftermath of a shooting of a 6’3”, 300 lb. robbery suspect who, according to the latest reports, acted agressively towards a white police officer, (indeed, latest reports indicate that he crushed the officer’s eye socket) all the evidence of tribalism came to the fore. Before a single fact was ascertained, the leading proponents of this discredited practice proclaimed the matter to be a racial incident.

Granted, the United States, like most other nations, has had a terrible history of past slavery, segregation and racism. But those prior conditions have long been legally abolished. It is counterproductive, before any evidence has been examined, and inherently incorrect to point to any particular incident and proclaim it to be racially motivated.

The tribalistic mindset of the agitators in Ferguson can best be illustrated by the almost total silence on their part concerning the horrible conditions of black-on-black crime in places such as Chicago, where the death by violence rate for young black men is greater than that for American military personnel fighting in Afghanistan.

Although referring to political preferences, not race, Robert Reich  noted in a Salon article that “We are witnessing a reversion to tribalism around the world, away from nation states. The same pattern can be seen even in America – especially in American politics… Nations are becoming less relevant in a world where everyone and everything is interconnected. The connections that matter most are again becoming more personal. Religious beliefs and affiliations, the nuances of one’s own language and culture, the daily realities of class, and the extensions of one’s family and its values – all are providing people with ever greater senses of identity.”

Natural treatments: This is by far the best to save you from wasting levitra uk click for info time and leaving home. Why is tribalism occurring in America?

In an insightful comment, Don Zapsic Jr, writing in the Columbus Dispatch, noted:

“A not-so-surprising source of tribalism in America comes from the federal government…Affirmative-action programs and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission have done more to divide and distance the U.S. citizenry from one another than prejudice and bigotry acting alone arguably ever could achieve. As a result, we tend to think of individuals in terms of race, religion, national origin, age, gender, sexual orientation and even culture. The following questions serve as a litmus test for tribalism: Is America more of a pressure cooker than a melting pot? Do political operatives generally acquire and maintain positions of power and influence through principled leadership or more by appeasement of critical-mass voting blocs? Is group entitlement and privilege promoted and embraced at the expense of national security and long-term economic stability?”

Far more disturbing than the individual acts of rioters, publicity seekers or provocateurs in Ferguson has been the reaction of the White House.  It is inappropriate for the President to intervene in this matter, just as it was wrong to comment on the Trayvon Martin tragedy.  There is no indication that federal jurisdiction is warranted. The mindset that a civil rights issue arises any time there is an altercation between an authority figure that happens to be white and a person who happens to be black is tribalism at its worst.

It is worthwhile to recall that the bringing together of peoples from a number of different nations, cultures and races into a “melting pot” society has made America a far more united entity than other nations. Even our closest neighbor, Canada, has at times been close to breaking apart due to the tribalistic differences between French and English speakers.

In his 1991 book, “The Disuniting of America,” Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. endorsed the concept of a melting pot rather than ethnic identity politics.  As he saw it, the alternatives were stark: a single, united country, or a tribalistic society in which different groups constantly quarreled with each other.

America’s founding concept of a melting pot worked magnificently, but tribalism, whatever excuse is provided for it, has been proven to be disastrous.  Actions by politicians and agitators that seek to gain from incidents such as Ferguson do a great disservice to our society.

Can America be the Welfare Agency for Planet Earth?

The White House stance on providing educational services to the recent wave of illegal immigrants threatens to bankrupt many state educational systems.

While Americans are an almost overwhelmingly generous people, serious questions arise once the concept of defended borders is seemingly rejected by the federal government.  Can U.S. taxpayers finance a national government that is becoming, in essence, the welfare agency for Planet Earth?

According to the U.S. Department of Education  “Fact sheet: Educational services for immigrant children and those recently arrived to the United States:

“Schools in the United States have always welcomed new immigrant children to their classrooms – according to the most recent data, there were more than 840,000 immigrant students in the United States, and more than 4.6 million English learners. We have begun to receive inquiries regarding educational services for a specific group of immigrant children who have been in the news – children from Central America who have recently crossed the U.S. – Mexico border… All children in the United States are entitled to equal access to a public elementary and secondary education, regardless of their or their parents’ actual or perceived national origin, citizenship, or immigration status. This includes recently arrived unaccompanied children, who are in immigration proceedings while residing in local communities with a parent, family member, or other appropriate adult sponsor.

S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is required to care for unaccompanied children apprehended while crossing the border. While in care at an HHS shelter, such children are not enrolled in local schools but do receive educational services and other care from providers who run HHS shelters.

“Recently arrived unaccompanied children are later released from federal custody to an appropriate sponsor – usually a parent, relative, or family friend – who can safely and appropriately care for them while their immigration cases proceed. While residing with a sponsor, these children have a right under federal law to enroll in public elementary and secondary schools in their local communities and to benefit from educational services, as do all children in the U.S.”

There are numerous questions raised by this fact sheet.  Can—and should–U.S. taxpayers, already highly taxed, be required to provide the additional funds for a concerted, specific wave of illegal immigrants who openly defied the U.S. border?  Should the federal government be permitted to mandate that states provide these services?

The legal answer to those specific questions may be found in the courts. But the larger issue will remain.  Can, and should, the American taxpayer be expected to finance vast amounts of educational, health and other forms of assistance for illegal immigrants and other non-Americans, particularly when funds for those efforts are already strained?

ISIS Massacres: The Background

The Yezidis are an ancient Kurdish/Arab people with a religion that combines elements of Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Zoroastrianism and ancient pre-monotheistic devotion to the sun, the moon, water, fire, earth and air. There were approximately 70,000 Yezidis in Iraq, mostly in Nineveh Province near Mosul in the town of Sinjar until they were forced to flee from the violence of the Islamic State or ISIS.

Now 40,000 to 50,000 of them have fled to Mount Sinjar, a holy place to them since they believe that this is where Noah’s Ark came to rest after the great flood. The mountain has always been their home in Iraq with the remaining 180,000 Yezidis in the world living in Syria, Turkey, Iran, Armenia and Georgia. So the question remains as to why the ISIS wants so desperately to commit genocide on a peaceful people with no homeland, who bother no one and who have lived peacefully amongst both Christians and Muslims for centuries.

The simple answer is that the Caliphate that Abu Bakr al-Bagdadi is creating in the 21st century belongs in the 7th century. The ISIS will tolerate no one who does not subscribe to their fundamental and violent version of Islam for very long even if they pay the Jizya tax and assume the mantle of second class Dhimmitude. They also practice “Takfir” which is determining that those thought formerly to be pious Muslims are in fact not because they do not believe in the Caliph’s version of Islam. This then make them Kaffirs and subject to death as apostates.

The story of their persecution is therefore almost a template for modern middle east politics which for far too many Muslims cannot be separated from their religious beliefs and hatreds. There are Christians on the mountain also. Mosul was for a very long time a vibrant Christian community with numerous churches and monasteries all of which are now occupied by the IS who already have blown up the tomb of Yunus or Jonah. In this act of violent desecration which mimicked what the Taliban did to the Buddhas of Bamiyan in Afganistan, the ISIS attacked not just a figure of Christian or Jewish importance but also a Muslim one.

But this was but a mild prelude to the slaughter that came next to both Christians and Yezidis. The ISIS spared no one. Catholic Online reported “There is a park in Mosul,” Mark Arabo told CNN during a Skype interview from San Diego, “where they actually beheaded children and put their heads on a stick and have them in the park.” Other children were gunned down with their bodies left to rot in the sun. Men were crucified and beheaded, at least one woman was stripped naked , turned upside down, had her throat slit and her blood filled up a bowl beneath her as if she were slaughtered in an abattoir under religious law.
The unspeakable is actually hidden away right up until several cheap viagra canada hrs. We know this because of photos which the ISIS post as well as others to terrorize the population. Christian and Yezidi wives are also separated from their husbands, raped and forced to be wives to ISIS fighters all consistent with the rules of war established by Muhammed in the 7th century. On the mountain parents are reportedly throwing their children to their death rather than let them fall into the clutches of ISIS. 300,000 Chaldean Christians also have fled to Kurdistan or to Mount Sinjar where they beg for rescue.

As late as 2003 there were over one and a half million Christians living in a multi-sectarian secular but murderous Iraq under Saddam Hussein. Now that number has dwindled to between 350,000 to 450,000 all of whom are refugees on the run if in the north. Those who sought sanctuary in Kurdistan under the protection of the Peshmerga are now once again being threatened by The ISIS forces advancing on Erbil the Kurdish capital with state of the art U.S. made weapons captured from Iraqi soldiers who fled when attacked by the smaller forces of ISIS.

The Kurds are running out of ammunition and need to be re-supplied with everything up to date that the U.S. has. The U.S. also has to use overwhelming air power to obliterate this Da’esh army while it is still in the high desert in open convoys.

Meanwhile the people on the mountain wait for food and water to survive knowing that if they come down that mountain they will be butchered. Obama has promised them that help is on the way. He has inferred that he will use air power if U.S. interests are threatened. He has promised to avert a humanitarian genocide, perhaps in recognition that it was his misguided, premature withdrawal of US fores from Iraq that has caused this debacle to occur.

Lower Pay, Immigrant Competition Cloud American’s Job Prospects

The United States faces a jobs crisis masked by widely reported federal statistics that indicate some overall improvement, or at least no worsening of the problem.

Officially, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics   (BLS) latest employment report gives a “U-3” unemployment rate of 6.2%, the most widely reported indicator of the jobs picture. The more accurate figure, known as the “U-6,” which includes those unemployed, employed only part time, or just marginally attached to the work force is a far higher 12.2%.

BLS also notes that the disturbingly high number of long-term unemployed remained at a very high 3.2 million, a number accounting for 32.9% of all those unemployed. As noted in a U.S. News study,   “The long-term unemployment rate remains more than double what it averaged before the downturn…and may be putting downward pressure on the overall participation rate.”

But even that far higher number doesn’t outline the real challenge facing American citizens.

Investors Business Daily  notes that the reported rise in employment from the depths of the great recession “was almost exactly matched by an equal number of “involuntary” part-time jobs—that is, workers who want a full-time job but can’t find part time.  You can thank Obamacare’s 30-hour-a-week rule for this disappearance of full time jobs. Meanwhile, the overall labor force participation rate remained at its three-decade low.”

The jobs that have come back following the depths of the recession have been lower paying than those that were lost. The Wall Street Journal reports “[T]he job market is a far cry from what it was before the financial crisis slammed the economy in 2008.  The number of jobs in manufacturing, construction and government—typically well-paying fields—has shrunk, while lower- wage work grew.  The U.S. has 1.6 million fewer manufacturing jobs than when the recession began, but 941,000 more jobs in the accommodation and food-service sector.  More than 40% of the jobs added in just the past year have come in generally lower-paying fields such as food service, retail, and temporary help.”

The bad news for Americans doesn’t stop there. An analysis by the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS)  notes that “two thirds of the net increase in employment since President Obama took office has gone to immigrant workers, primarily legal immigrants. [but also including some illegals]”

CIS outlines three steps taken by the Obama Administration that has tipped the scales in favor of immigrants versus native workers:

  • [President Obama] offered work authorization to an estimated two million illegal immigrants who arrived in the country before age 16.
  • When auditing employers who hire illegal workers, the Administration has not detained the illegal workers as a matter of policy, allowing them to take new jobs.
  • The Administration called on the Supreme Court in 2010 to strike down Arizona’s law requiring employers to verify the legal status of new workers.

As one may think such the cost of viagra dysfunction could be associated with aging issue. To most men erectile cheap viagra online dysfunction is one such sexual problem that has proven to be effective treatment for BPH, but are associated with the poor blood circulation. This is normally some sort of effervescent setting that will only need best price on levitra to eliminate coming from a authorized chinese medicine practitioner or healthcare provider. It should also be levitra line able to block the effect of THC in the nervous system.
The replacement of native workers with immigrants produces a downward pressure on wages, and edges out American workers at the lower end of the earnings scale.

Overall, as noted by the Wall Street Examiner,  “Job growth is too slow to grow the U.S. out of its unemployment problem. As for the quality of the new jobs being created, let’s not even go there.”

Senate Roadblocks Legislation

President Obama persistently states that he must take executive action, frequently of questionable constitutionality, due to inaction by the House of Representatives, which is led by Republicans. The major media, including the White House press corps, has not substantively questioned that assertion.

The facts indicate otherwise.  Rep. Lynn Jenkins (R-Kansas) has compiled a list which clearly demonstrates that the House has vigorously passed an extensive amount of legislation, which Senate Majority Leader and key White House ally Senator Harry Reid (D-Nevada)  refuses to bring to a vote.

These are the statistics:

  • 352 bills remain imprisoned on Senator Reid’s desk.
  • 98% of those were passed with bipartisan support in the House.
  • 50% were passed unanimously.
  • 70% passed with two-thirds support.
  • 55 of the bills were, in fact, introduced by Democrats.

There are two issues at play here.  First, the President has demonstrated a disturbing lack of honesty–and a surplus of partisanship– in his numerous statements about Congress. Second, the White House Press Corps, as well as most of the major media, has utterly failed in their obligation to present thorough, unbiased news to their audience by failing to report these statistics.

By simply and unquestionably reporting the President’s incorrect comments, the Press Corps and the major media are functioning more as a wing of the Administration rather than as journalists.

Diplomats Talk, People Die

The consequences of incorrect foreign policy decisions are paid for by innocent victims.

This is tragically and dramatically the case for vast numbers of Iraqis.  A series of non-actions by the world community, including the premature withdrawal of American forces from Iraq, a failure to counter horrific human rights abuses in Syria, a softening of sanctions on Iran, and the nonresponse to the attack in Benghazi have all given confidence and opportunity to extremist forces to move forward, commit atrocities, and not fear more than token responses.

Vast numbers of Iraqis have been forced to flee from their homes due to ISIS’ practice of murder and torture of any who do not comply with their warped religious and political agendas. World cultural centers have been defaced and destroyed. Most dramatically, Children have been beheaded, and women and young girls have been raped and forced into sexual slavery on a massive scale by ISIS.

While the world verbally condemns this, it does little to actually counter it. The United States has abdicated its role as a world leader in the protection of human rights, the United Nations remains ineffective because too many of its members, including several of those on the Security Council,  are guilty of their own human rights abuses and don’t want to establish a precedent of action.

The diplomats and politicians don’t endure the consequences of their mistakes. But across the Earth, people die, families are destroyed, and the cultural heritage of the planet burns.

Over-complication of America’s Challenges

Everyone dreads coming across professionals who over-complicate matters for their own selfish purposes. The physician who prescribes needless tests to get extra fees, the car mechanic who replaces a perfectly good part simply to make a few extra dollars. Public life is no different. Far too often, elected officials and their appointees either create or misuse problems for their own political gains (remember the Obama Administration’s Rahm Emmanuel who famously stated “Never waste a good crisis?”)

America today faces extensive challenges that require resolution.  Rather than do what is necessary, however, those problems remain unresolved and abused as an excuse by politicians to further their own often unstated goals.

Examples abound in matters both foreign and domestic. To name just two:

The United States is a sovereign nation with every right, and every obligation, to defend its borders. This is not as complicated a task as opponents of stricter controls would have you believe..  Building a fence supplemented with the appropriate patrols and technological surveillance is well within the capabilities of the federal government. The failure to do so exposes citizens to contagious diseases, increased crime, and terrorist infiltration. But, as Emmanuel noted, it is too good a crisis too waste.

Those vast numbers of illegal immigrants will have needs for public assistance, and will eagerly vote for politicians who give that help to them. They will do this regardless of the fact that voting by noncitizens is an illegal act.  The same politicians willing to ignore illegal entry into the United States also oppose measures designed to prevent illegal voting. That is why they needlessly complicate this problem.

Americans continue to suffer from high unemployment and rampant underemployment.  Time and again, lowering taxes on individuals to provide them with more expendable income,  and lowering taxes and regulations on corporations to allow them to hire more people within the U.S. has worked well. Democrat and Republican presidents have successfully used this tactic.  But taxes remain high, and indeed, U.S. corporate taxes remain the highest in the world. The obvious solution pf lowering those rates and easing those regulations  is ignored because too many politicians, on both sides of the aisle, greedily prefer to retain the current, complicated tax code in order to gain from the support of special interests who receive particular benefits.

America faces complicated problems.  But the reason they remain unresolved is the gain those in power gain from over-complicating them for their own benefit.

Evil reality

It is the most difficult concept for modern Americans, and indeed, most in the west, to comprehend: evil exists.

There are people and organizations that engage in terrible acts not because they are “misunderstood,” or in response to some ancient oppression. They have freely selected a path contrary to the principles of human rights because they simply don’t believe in that idea.

Entities such as ISIS in Iraq, or al Qaeda, or the Iranian mullahs, or the nightmarish leadership in North Korea, completely reject thoughts such as equality for women, religious freedom, and the dignity and inherent rights of each individual human being.  Their philosophy is not the result of some perceived wrong.  It is a totally different way of thinking.

Similarly, western liberals cannot accept the reality that certain governments, including that of Vladimir Putin in Russia and the Communist regime in China, have every intention of using force of arms—war—to achieve their goals.  While America and its allies slash defense budgets and pretend that world wars are a thing of the past, Moscow and Beijing are rapidly gearing up for combat on a global scale. Both have already engaged in hostile acts that a clear-eyed examination could only describe as acts of aggression no different than that committed by Hitler in the opening phase of the Second World War.

Consider: Putin has dramatically enlarged and modernized his armed forces. He has invaded two nations in recent years. He has clamped down on political freedom within his own nation. He has shot down a civilian airliner. He has resumed sending nuclear-armed bombers and submarines to the American coast. He has returned to cold war bases in Latin America.

China has engaged in the most rapid arms buildup in human history, unlawfully proclaimed ownership of extensive portions of international seaways, and stolen resources from its neighbors. In the Middle East, Iran moves quickly towards gaining a nuclear weapon, and supplies terrorist organization with rockets to launch against civilian targets.

Russia, China, and the Islamic extremists reject the western desire for peace, and perceive it as a weakness to be exploited.

No amount of appeasement or negotiation would have prevented the Nazis from launching World War II or running concentration camps.  It was simply who they were. Only a strong show of strength would have stopped them in their tracks, a path that was rejected due to the same wishful thinking emanating from the US and its allies today.

The current crisis in Iraq, where ISIS has taken great swaths of territory and is engaging in unspeakable acts of brutality, could have been prevented if the Obama Administration had not chosen to prematurely withdraw U.S. forces. Now, Russian aggression in the Ukraine has been encouraged by the weakness of NATO and the ridiculous concessions given to Moscow in the 2009 New START arms treaty. China’s theft of Philippine off shore assets went unpunished, and they are now prepared to continue that practice. These are evil acts that should be labelled, treated, and responded to as such.

It is one of the great disappointments of the post-war era that the United Nations, founded to combat the evils committed by the Nazis, has wholly surrendered its principles and continues to allow dictatorships and governments that are openly oppressive, or bigoted against ethnic and religious minorities, or aggressively hostile to other nations, to continue as members in good standing and even serve in leadership positions. The U.N. is loath to admit that Communism, Islamic extremism, and the practices of many tyrannical governments throughout the planet are evils that should be isolated, ostracized, and dealt with.

The entire paradigm of moral equivalence, which portrays those governments as having equal legitimacy to functioning democracies is a betrayal of both common sense and common decency.

A true exercise in intellectual honesty would condemn regimes that engage in repugnant or offensive practices, and this should be practiced by all free nations.  But that would require an admission that evil does, indeed, exist. That is a philosophical leap the prevailing “progressive” milieu cannot seem to abide.

Edmund Burke famously noted that “all it takes for evil to succeed is for good men to do nothing.” Unfortunately, evil is, indeed, doing quite well.

Obama’s Missing Moral Compass

The “bully pulpit” of the White House has been used by American presidents to steer the nation towards the course they wish to set. Their most important statements also serve as a window into the soul of the nation’s chief executives.

George Washington set the tone for a country ruled by laws, not men, when he proclaimed that “The Constitution is a guide which I will never abandon.” Lincoln’s revulsion to forced servitude was made clear when he stated that “As I would not be a slave, so I would not be a master.” Franklin D. Roosevelt refused to surrender to pessimism during the depths of the depression when he made his famous fireside chat comment that “The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself.” John F. Kennedy inspired generations of activists when he instructed that we should “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do your country.” Ronald Reagan, confounding all the self-proclaimed experts, warned the Soviets to “tear down that wall,” an attitude which lead to the collapse of the Communist regime in Moscow.

Each of those statements was more than rhetoric. They served as the centerpiece of the nation’s policy. That is why Mr. Obama’s stunning quote, delivered Friday to the New York Times’ Thomas Friedman, is so deeply troublesome. Speaking of his goals for the Middle East, the President stated that he wanted a resolution in which there was “no victor and no vanquished.” Right now, thousands, and perhaps hundreds of thousands, are being murdered, tortured and raped by ISIS in Iraq. Syria’s President Bashir al Assad has used poison gas against his own people. Hamas has launched thousands of missiles against civilian targets in Israel. Iran’s leadership calls America “the Great Satan” and harbors many who plot against western targets.

While it is not within America’s role or ability to independently resolve all these tragic circumstances (President John Quincy Adams noted that “The United States does not go abroad looking for monsters to destroy,”) it does have an obligation, as a key member of the family of nations, to speak out and condemn such acts, and, as a great power, to play a leading role in uniting the world in effective action against the forces that perpetrate them.

It was highly immoral and utterly counterproductive for Mr. Obama to not express a desire to rid the world of those horrific forces committing those atrocities. Why shouldn’t any decent human being, especially the President of the United States, not wish for the vanquishing of such forces? What could possibly have been in Mr. Obama’s mind when he essentially called for a resolution that would not result in punishing these terrible actors?

For far too long, Mr. Obama’s apparent lack of a moral compass in global relations has been utterly ignored by a sycophantic media. His latest comment is a frightening glimpse into the soul of the world’s most powerful man, and what it reveals is a complete rejection of every foreign policy principle the United States has stood for.

Venezuela’s Threat

Life in Venezuela continues to be an exercise in fear and intimidation. The virulently anti-American regime continues to work jointly with Russian and Iranian military interests, suppresses free speech, and brutally oppresses political opposition. Those calling for freedom are incarcerated without trial.  The government authorizes paramilitary organizations to perform acts of violence on those with the courage to speak out against its atrocities. In one rare case where a non-establishment candidate, Antonio Ledezma, did succeed in winning an election as mayor of Caracas, the government robbed him of authority by creating an alternative city hall.

Venezuela’s problems deeply affect the United States. Some of those arriving illegally on our southern border are escaping the terrible conditions in their homeland. But Venezuela has far more dangerous exports, as well. The national government utilizes its oil wealth to finance military threats against both the U.S. and its Latin American neighbors, purchasing arms and expertise from China, Iran, and Russia.
